Windows XP: Kill it, bin it, upgrade it

Windows XP is old, outdated, insecure in comparison to modern day operating systems, and frankly it’s a relic from the millennium which has gone well past its sell-by date.
It’s the sour, emulsifying yogurt of the technology world, basically.

Kari I couldn't agree more. I honestly think that the best thing that MS can do is just turn round and say "Do you know what? XP is 10 years old, we have 2 great OS's out ahead of it" and just pull the plug. How many times has support been extended now?

If they keep reprieving it from its long overdue death, all they are really doing is reinforcing the idea in those people who insist that it is the best OS ever, that there is still a place for it in todays Computing World.

Can you imagine in 2007 if more than 75% of people were still running Windows 98? Would ANYONE not recommend an upgrade?

I agree but the Ubuntu suggestion wouldn't work. For the Windows user, everything should work out of the box. The better option is Linux Mint. From personal experience it is by far the easiest Linux distro to transition to.

When vista came out I hated the new GUI and the fact that they moved everything around bugged me. Tho now that I am using 7 I don't have much of a problem with that. Although I wish they did not force people to do so much work just to reenable the quick launch toolbar.

That and re-enable the classic style start menu

With all due respect, let me disagree. I was recommending Linux Mint to those wanting to try Linux first time, but after finding gOS Gadgets, I chaged my mind. Absolutely the most easy introduction to Linux.

@lppsguay@... Thanks to the Obama administration I am now unemployed. Why should I spend money on hardware and software with no substantive increase in capability?

This kills me... I guess is the reason why most people are refusing to throw away their PC's, or XP... sadly, is the same point here in my country...

I see that 7 is way superior, but most people cannot afford the upgrade. Even worse, I guess we are reaching the limit in OS deplovement, now multicores are handled fine in 7, most GPU's are handled at 100%, now memory speed superior to 800 Mhz is better managed... the OS runs better because of that... but unless we see an automated system that does everithing for us, I guess that there is no reason to wait for windows 8 or 9 or whatever... even more... 64 bit is still new in the OS world, so unless we get the first 64 bit virus... everithing else is futile.

The Computer world is constantly advancing. Just 10 years ago we didn't have things like Blu-Ray, Smartphones were only for the very rich, Quad Core CPU's were a pipedream, the list goes on.

Do you really think the computing world will just stop? There will always be a need for bigger and better OS's unless we technologically regress.

The only reason why I stick with XP is because I don't have the money to upgrade my desktop (or fix my laptop, which was running 7) to the proper performance specs to run it... so until I get better hardware, I am stuck with XP.

Because the new Start menu and taskbar are far superior and make things a lot easier?

The only "classic" thing I brought from my old habits was the Control Panel in menu form.

A good example of why is this:
I've had a Startup sound file that I've used for the past ten years on every PC I've had.
Today, I downloaded hacker programs, jumped through hoops, pulled my hair and screamed at my computer, all to just set the Startup sound in 7 to my old favorite wav file. I probably wasted two hours in the endeavor. That's BS!!!!!!!

Why on earth would some over paid programmer lock that sound file inside a .dll file?
Absurd! Ridiculous! Asinine! And just plain disgusting!

I'm just tickled silly, that I don't have to use Windows 7. I have it on a second HD for testing purposes only. XP remains my main OS and will till I die. If MS doesn't want to support it......GOOD! I don need no stinkin' MS support!:devil:

Solved: Changing startup sound too difficult

I hate 7!

After searching the web and consulting some geekier friends of mine, I finally found a fix to your issue:

• Save that melody you can not live without to an MP3 player
• When booting to Seven, put earphones on your head and connect them to that MP3 player
• Turn volume on MP3 player to maximum
• Turn your computer on using left index finger
• Push Play in MP3 player with right indexfinger

(notice that you can also use thumbs in steps 4 & 5)

Seriously, what do you think it tells about you that you refuse to migrate to Seven because you can not hear a few seconds long melody once, twice a day? Why do you have computer?

True, but I've had many friends downgrade their systems for performance reasons. And I can see the difference.

I did misunderstand the gist of the topic at first (I'm tired. Haha) but it still applies somewhat.

I, too, have a favorite WAV file I have used for startup since Win 98. Yes, I am disappointed that I could not substitute it. However, in light of the increased security and how well Win 7 runs, that is a very small disappointment. I certainly would not go back to XP just to hear the sound of my diesel truck starting up and running. That would be totally stupid on my part.

For some people no it is not...I use the quick launch every day and I would be pissed if they were to remove it...I did not even want to use 7 until I saw how to re-enable it

The new start menu is ok, but I HATE "pinning" items to the taskbar as for me it just takes up a lot more room then the quick launch dose and it dose not group every one together

Tell me, how is pinning any different to Quick Launch? the only difference is they spread across your taskbar.

However, once launched, they still take up the same amount of room on the Taskbar, using Quick Launch they take up double the space, as it makes a new Icon when you launch it
