Windows XP: Kill it, bin it, upgrade it

Here are my thoughts...

Bottom line is this..
I run APPLICATIONS...NOT OS's.

All the buzz about 7..xp..yadda..yadda...WHO CARES.
Personally..all I need is a stable kernal and the ability add what I want.
If 'windows kernel' was available on a floppy disk..I'd buy that and build the rest myself. :D
(Of course I'll also accept basic I/O capabilites)

The OS should only be there for presentation and hardware management. Beyond that? STFU, get out of the way..and let me run my APPLICATIONS.
I DONT CARE about your 'add-ons' (Add-ons amount to anything beyond a presentation manager and I/O control)
You say this; but then you extol the virtues of XP. XP does not fit your criteria above or in your last paragraph.
I said the same thing about XP when I first came out.. You shoulda been there.. ;)

As far as 7 goes?
Its a pig. Its bloated junk if I had to be honest about it. (And I know many agree)
The only thing 'saving it' is the fact that commodity computers are more powerful than the space shuttle and can run the dang thing.
Its the APPLICATIONS that should be the focus of hardware/resource upgrades..not the freakin OS.
I heard this same complaint made about XP when it came out.
It may have been me..under a different screen name. :D

If it wasnt for the fact that a certain IVO character ;) wrote a classic menu for 7, it would barely be used.
I absolutely hate the new menu. Its dumb(sorted backwards), includes dumbazz 'links'/redirects to legacy directories(for which there was no sane reason to 'redesign'), and introduces the stoopidest thing I've ever seen: 'Libraries'. Sure..lets obscure the actual file locations even further with more abitrary links! Ya! Thats the ticket! If I want 'links'..I'll make me own!
MS promotes 'look and feel', the 'experience' and boot times.
Look and feel.. Who cares. I 'look' only when I'm starting my apps. And 'feel' your taking up resources that my apps should be using.
'Experience'.. I 'experience' on the way to load my apps. And I get a lil bit more 'experience' when I had to config the OS's odbc connectors.
Boot time? Gee. 30 seconds faster. Hey moron. Its just a service load order. You 'think' your completely up. Your not. Services are still firing after you login. Its mostly just an 'illusion'. Its just a more efficient boot 'ORDER' rather than anything ground breaking. (No..I dont use prefetch...and shut down most services using only the ones i 'need'.)
What you are really saying is that you don't like change. You want Win 7 to be like and operate like XP and you are trying to mange Win 7 as you manage XP - which does not work, by the way. Basically you are frustrating yourself - and doing a fine job of it.
No...
What I said..was I want a stable kernel..and a simple UI...
And thats it.
Again(x3) I run apps..not OS's.

Bahhh..You get the idea.

Yet the main reason I've gone to 7 is the ability to employ the 8GB of physical memory I have in my main rig.
Beyond that? I'm not terribily impressed. Actually..with all the 'changes', I just use the 'godmode' link to access all the settings since MS has everything spread around so as to be 'pretty'. (I swear the layout changes must have been outsourced to india or developed 'by committee'..in india )
Once I have my prefs done...I'm done. I forget about the OS..and...yup..use my APPS.

I have 7 on few other machines. But XP is still utilized and kicking. I see no reason to go to 7 on ANY of the machines running XP. There is no compelling 'need'.

Hate me..I dont care.
I really have no 'opinion' on 7 'features'...unless of course they really suck or are beyond convoluted or is just useless(Most thinks about windows fit these descriptions.).
But as I stated. I just want a stable environment with a simple/fast front en UI.
Beyond that? Its just baggage.
And when you find that, please let us know. :)
You'll be the first.. :D

Windows 7 is so Crippled .. I will use XP if I have any serious work to do.
I guess we all define and do different work. I know that you have stated in the past that you feel that Windows 7 is crippled....however for me, I don't see that at all. I use Windows 7 Enterprise in a corporate environment and it's been as usable to me as XP or Vista ever was. The methods of doing a few things have changed, and this difference takes some time to get used to...but with time the old way of doing things often seems confusing.

Sometimes little used features are dropped in efforts to support other areas that are more used. While it stinks for the person who actually used them, the overall impact to the community is often small. And then you hear people complain that version X is "too bloated"....but then again this person wants it to include every single feature that it's ever had in the past and every single thing that any person could imagine now.

found something for ya Noyb:

http://superuser.com/questions/89747/initiate-scan-and-ocr-in-microsoft-office-word-2010-beta

In 2007 you could add the Import From Scanner functionality back via creating a macro. I'm NOT sure if this will work under 2010 but it's probably worth a try. :)
Create the following Macro (View > Macro > View Macros > Macros in Normal.dotm > Type 'scan' as the name > Create > Paste in code:
Sub InsertFromScanner() On Error Resume Next WordBasic.InsertImagerScanEnd Sub
You can then 'Customise the Quick Access Toolbar' > choose commands from: 'Macros' and ADD. Then Modify it to give it a distinctive icon.
This will give you the 'insert from scanner' box with one click from the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).
They seem to want most OCR work done in OneNote these days, so I'm not exactly sure how much OCR is still available in Word (my clients just wanted to scan in images).

Same here.. 7Ent here at work.
I'm 'testing'.. only a few instances of 7 in our enterprise.
I still have to 'flip over' to my 'ol XP box to get some work done. This is due to to incompatibilities..or things just 'not right' under Win7.
So..I know the feeling.

Heck...just today I discovered that 7 wont pass thru an old domain controlled snap server. (And ya..I set all the NTLM auth levels). Still no go.
XP passes thru just fine.
Oh well.... Thats just another lil doo-dad on my plate.

IMO this is borderline racism, which has no place on global tech forums.
Playing the race card I see...(weak!)
Listen...I have to deal with 'outsourcing'..
I'm a 20+ year 'pro' in the industry.
When YOU have to deal with garbage code, language barriers...doubled up(or more) QA....THEN you can come talk to me.. Mmmkay?
I STAND by my above statement.
In which way is opposing racism weak? I'm very keen to learn to know.

I'm 30+ year pro (notice: no quotes), lived and worked abroad all my adult life. Judging by your posts, I've forgotten more about IT and computing than you are ever going to learn.

I've seen garbage code and coders from all over the world, also from America and Western Europe. I've fought the language barrier by learning English and several other languages, you have to remember not having a common language to communicate is not only the other guys fault. You language clearly shows you are like me not a native English speaker, so maybe it could be your way to start to fight those barriers, to take some lessons and learn to master English.

Mmmkay?

Finally.... if you dont like 'MY OPINION' on 7...then either retort with something valid or just 'sit down'.
Sorry....You'll just have to realize that not everybody is a 7 fanboy.
I admit you are right there. Of course it should not be allowed on a Windows 7 themed forums to comment a post criticizing and bashing Windows 7.

I'll try to remember that.

As I stated..I'm about APPLICATIONS....
You can keep defending the OS and play there.. I'll be off getting some work done...Mmmkay. :sleepy:
Please could you give me a list of applications that work standalone, without operating system? Even a short list?

As far as 'racism' goes... STUFF it.
Using the race card is for the weak. YOUR accusation of 'racism' is the weak part.
I made my comment based on the quality of coding ive seen from 'off shore'.. Not their skin color..
GET IT?!?!
(And personally..I hate individuals that use the race card to blunt a conversation/debate. It is THEY that are the weak minded.)

I doubt that...quite a bit...

I've seen garbage code from here(US) as well..
But not nearly as much from our 'offshores'.
I manage about 70+ of them in a VMware enviro I had to build for em. (VMware admin...just another of the MANY hats I wear.)
And for what its worth...when your working IN MY COUNTRY. Its for YOU to learn english..Its not for me to learn some durka durka language that has N+1 dialects.
Got it?

Well...gee..
Would one conclude that win7 is not 'all that' when we have a forum FULL of problems, shortcomings, incompatibilities and other misc issues?
If 7 was 'all that'...this forum would ONLY have folks praising it and discussing what color they prefer for their desktop.

Lets put it this way...
Its quite simple really...
If I had to work in some other country..I would make it a priority to learn the local language...and speak it well...
I would not 'expect' somebody to learn my yankee doodle dandy, hodgepodge of illogically structured communication.

Let's stop with the personal insults. They are totally unnecessary. Let's also stop with the stereotypical put downs. They don't contribute anything to an intelligent discussion.

It not weakness to object to stereotypical remarks; it is called politeness and respect for others.
