Windows XP Mode - Install and Setup

How to Install and Setup Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

   Information
Windows XP Mode is 32-bit XP Pro SP3 virtual machine.

Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run your applications for 32-bit Windows XP directly from your Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7. Windows XP Mode provides only Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise users the flexibility to run many older productivity applications in a virtual Windows XP environment on a Windows 7-based PC.

UPDATE: Windows XP Mode now accessible to more PCs | Blogging Windows

   Note
Windows Virtual PC (step 1 below) is the latest Microsoft virtualization technology for Windows 7. It is the runtime engine for Windows XP Mode to provide a virtual Windows environment for Windows 7. With Windows Virtual PC, Windows XP mode applications can be seen and accessed from a Windows 7-based PC. For more detailed information about Windows Virtual PC, see Windows Virtual PC: Documentation

To find out whether your computer's CPU is capable of hardware-assisted virtualization. To check, download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool.
  • If you receive the message “This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization,” you can run Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. See the instructions below.
  • If you receive the error message "There is no hardware-assisted virtualization support in the system," your computer's CPU doesn't support hardware-assisted virtualization. You can still use Windows XP Mode by installing an update to Windows 7. See Why am I receiving errors about hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) when I try to use Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC?. Be aware that XP Mode will run much better if hardware-assisted virtualization can be enabled.

Your welcome! I'll be giving this a real close look next week once the RCs are set up and running well here and XP being replaced of course will be looking for a new home. This will provide a place in both 32 and 64bit for XP to stop by and say hello once and awhile before the final bye bye! :D

John is absolutely correct. Whilst you can be just a subscriber, and can view information and post and answer questions on the forums, etc, there are certain areas which are not available unless you are a PAID subscriber. Incidentally, I am not a paid subscriber, so I am also waiting for the public releases.

Hello Ulls,

If you mean to install your xp64 for the virtual machine, then no. You can only use a 32-bit OS as a virtual machine (guest).

Ex_Brit and Brink Thanks,

I just got it running and its ok but I see no big thing with it. My 2 cents, I'll keep running with Sun Virtual box or vmware. It is hard to go back to 32-bit after running with x64 for long time now.

Thanks
ULLS

The main items that are different with Windows Virtual PC is the ability to have and use shortcuts from the Virtual Machine in Windows 7, and for the Virtual Machine to have access to all of the files and folders on the computer's drives.

That's great to know since I just wiped the 32bit XP out here! :roflmao:

While waiting for the 5th deadline I will be running a few scans on the ones seeing the matched numbers to look them over for anything. I was wondering if the XP mode is available now or you have to wait for that one as well?

I'm been busy rearranging a few things like changing ports for each drive as well and have few small recovery partitions I can choose for this. Well I have to be prepared for the big day here! :D

"Now where did XP go again?" "sorry made room for each 7 to have it's own drive!" :D
