Windows XP, system restore error message after 6 tries.

Have tried to FIX system restore (disabled antivirus, messed around with config etc.) with no luck. Gave up. Now trying to restore to factory settings but the F8 safe mode has no "repair computer" option. Thinking about the "dumpster solution". Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I had a system restore issue before in Windows 7 myself. Turned out it was Softperfect's RAM drive software preventing system restore from working. You may have a program that is causing system restore from working. That's my guess. Or perhaps it has something to do with shadow copies.

You don't need to chuck it in the trash. You could always reinstall the OS as a last ditch effort. Or sell the computer on eBay.

Did you try running in safe mode
Start computer and begin pressing <F8> every second, choose safe mode
