Windows7 x64 always tries to run files that have no extension

I don't know when this problem started to happen.

I have many files on my Amiga and often transfer them to the PC and vice versa. Both computers are on the same network. There are many files on the Amiga without an extension and AmigaOS detects what type of file they are even when there is no extension (so you can have an mp3 file named Music.jpg and double clicking it would not start the picture viewer but the mp3 player). On the PC side when I double clicked such a file (for example a text file named "README", previously it asked me which program to run it with. Something changed this behavior now. The problem now is that it simply tries to execute files without extensions (regardless of the file type) and tells me: "README is not a valid Win32 application". Does anyone know what I have to do to return it back to its default behavior (double clicking does not try to execute the file)

It does not work. Windows identifies every file (doesn't matter what type of file it is. mp3, jpg, avi, txt, etc...) without an extension as filetype: "file". And it still tries to execute them.

Try the lnk registry file in the same tutorial. Those are the two most common extensions that cause an error of this type.
You are merging the file - right?

Yes I merged the registry file. But it does not work as expected because the error I get are from files that have no extension at all. Maybe there is some kind of registry entry that controls what to do for files that do not have any extension.

Like I said... Originally, when you double click a file that has no extension, it asks which program you want to run it with (and you can not set a default program for files without an extension). This behavior changed for some reason and now Windows7 tries to execute them thinking they are exe files. When I look to the properties of files without extensions, it says "type: file"

Try deleting the extension from one of your files to see what I mean.

If you have AutoPlay turned ON, you could try turning it OFF to see if that helps and what it does.

If you don't like it turned off, you can always turn it back on.

Maybe something turned it ON...causing your problem with "no extension files" ???

I understand the no extension, I just can't recall how to fix it I was fairly certain that restoring the defaults to .exe was the solution.

both solutions did not work.

It's maybe because that type of file is seen as "file" and not "unknown" when I look at properties - details of files without an extension. Is that what it used to be?

EDIT: The problem was fixed when I deleted this entry (I did not even launch this game for a long time... I guess EA's Origin client messed something up because the problem appeared all of a sudden)

Yes, no extension is reported as file in properties.

I did a quick search and found that it's apparently an issue with other games as well. I never would have found that information without your post showing the exact registry key (file association Type - it doesn't exist on my machine).

How did you decide that was the culprit? There are hundreds of classes.
