Winpatrol 19.1 Released

SIW2,

If you still have WinPatrol PLUS installed, your name and RegCode will be on the PLUS tab (you may have checked the box to hide the PLUS code). When you install the update, just exit WinPatrol, install the update and allow WinPatrol to launch. However, in the event you switched computers and forgot to note your PLUS code, just send an email to [email protected]. Bill will resend your license information. (If you are using a different e-mail address now, it may help if you provide the address you used previously.)

I clicked yes to it. Didn't change any of my settings.

I don't need it changing my update settings for me. Also uninstalled it for the time being, as I can't have it popping up a uac prompt on reaching the desktop at every bootup of the machine.

If you're still getting the UAC prompt then we somehow have two copies of WinPatrol trying to start. This may have occurred when 19.0 was installed and should have been fixed with the new build.
In the new versions of WinPatrol I have implemented a quick fix.

  • Open up the main WinPatrol tabbed Interface.
  • Click on the Options tab.
  • You should see a check box that says, “Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts”
  • Just Unclick the box in front of this message.
  • Now click it again so the checkbox remains.
This action will remove the multiple copies of WinPatrol in the Startup List and initialize the correct startup setting.

For those interested...
WinPatrol is split into two components to provide the best possible performance.

WinPatrol.exe is the small component which monitors for changes on your system. This is the program which displays the little Scotty in the taskbar and remains running in the background at all times. This component doesn't require UAC access and should not bring up the UAC prompt.

When you double click on the little Scotty icon it launches our main tabbed interface or WinPatrol Explorer(WinPatrolEx.exe). The program provides the main interface and allows you to review all your various programs. This component will bring up the UAC prompt because it's the power house that is allowed to change your system configuration values. The tabbed interface is also launched if WinPatrol.exe is launched a 2nd time. When you click on "Close", this program is removed from memory so only the smallest required portion of WinPatrol is running.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Thank you, Bill -- both for responding to my e-mail about AirBot's issue with the UAC prompt and also for the thorough explanation. We certainly can't have AirBot surfing without Scotty! (I've posted in the topic at SC that you are working on a fix for the Windows Update prompt.)

Hi Bill.

Ok, so there are 2 winpatrol entries there in startup. With Autoruns, one under -

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

And another under -

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Now unchecking the Run Winpatrol start with Windows checkbox like you say and then rechecking it back on, does remove the one under the Wow6432Node, but rechecking your Run with Windows startup adds in back in there, and it still gives the uac prompt and Winpatrol interface launch (if you click Yes to the prompt) at bootup everytime.

You mention to re enable it though so the tickbox is checked again, right?

I might add this just started to happen with installing 19.1.2010.0, and then 19.1.2010.1 also.

I've cleaned traces of WinPatrol when uninstalling and reinstalling to see if it would help, which it didn't. It stills adds both entries with a clean install of it.
After uninstalling, cleaned one left over entry under the Wow6432Node startup, folder from Program Files (x86), appdata/roaming/Winpatrol, and under HKCU/Software/BillP Studios entry.

Not clear on if you are saying one of the entries in the startup list is not supposed to be there at all, or yes they both are supposed to be there, but of course not have the UAC prompt at boot behavior.

I no longer find it necessary to uninstall WinPatrol when updating. I merely exit WinPatrol, install the update and launch WinPatrol at finish.

All I have running is the monitor, WinPatrol.exe, located in the Wow6432Node.

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\WinPatrol should have one each of
  • Uninstall WinPatrol
  • WinPatrol Explorer (which requires UAC)
  • WinPatrol Help
  • WinPatrol (the monitor)
   Information

Warning: To readers of this topic, do not edit the registry without making a backup first.

I'm wondering if you need to do a complete removal of WinPatrol, including deleting the WinPatrol folder at C:\Users\%User%\AppData\Roaming\ as well as the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BillP Studios

Note: If you are a PLUS user, note your username and Reg Code before performing the above.

This one still added both entries under

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

When installing, but this time (unlike the one from before) when un-checking and re-checking the start with windows option on WP, it removed the one under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and left just the one under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

So now it doesn't throw the uac prop up. So I'm assuming that's the proper one to only have there.

WOW6432Node

First, don't try to make any sense our of the WOW6432Node. :)
It's evil Microsoft plot created by the Office Team to make their 64 bit version easier to program. For our purposes it's just a mirror of what we write to the normal registry tree.

I can confirm it doesn't have anything to do with when you're getting the UAC request. I was surprised by the same message yesterday on my non 64 bit system. Unfortunately, I can't duplicate it now.

I almost have it narrowed down but what you can do if you'd like to help is this...
If you get the UAC message for WinPatrolEx again on boot up check the WinPatrol folder for a file temp.reg. You'll want to check before you reply to the UAC message because it will be deleted afterwards.

If you find the file temp.reg, let me know what it says and that should help me get rid of it.

Thanks!
Bill

There is a temp.reg in Appdata/Roaming/Winpatrol that is still there, is this the one you're talking about? That's what it says -

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
