Wireless Adapter Disabled

So I'm trying to get this USB wireless adapter I have to work, it's a Rosewill RNX-N1. But I can't seem to enable it in the Network Connections folder. It is always marked as disabled. I can right click it and try to enable it, and it will say it is enabled, but it won't really do anything. It will still stay disabled.

If I click diagnose it tells me there may be problems with the drivers of it, but it doesn't tell me what those problems are. I've installed the drivers both using the auto install in Windows and by getting the drivers from the people who made the adapters website.

So does anybody know how I can get this thing to work?

Also I'm not sure if this is related, but a "Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter" has appeared out of nowhere in my Network Connections folder when I was trying to get this to work. It's disabled too.

Yes I believe so. In the device manager it gives me the option to disable but not to enable.

Go into device manager and delete the wireless card. Then reboot. Dont let windows install the drivers, manually right-click on the installer from the card manufacturer and click "properties". Go to the compatibility tab and select "vista sp1", check the box to "run as administrator", then click "ok". Run the installer, and let us know what it does.

Nope, it should be. This problem has been so hard to resolve because it seems like I'm the only one having it, most things I can find about the wireless adapter and Windows 7 is how easy it works with it.

I contacted Rosewill about it and they said this "Actually, RNX-N1 can support for Windows 7 without any driver help."

I tried that but once I put the adapter in Windows automatically starts installing the drivers and I can't stop it.

Alright so I also just found out that if I uninstall the drivers using the program from Rosewill, it will still power on when plugged in. It will still have two drivers. Maybe it has something to do with the Windows drivers and Rosewill drivers interfering with each other? If I install the drivers manually and let Windows install automatically there is a total of 4 different drivers.

I'm gonna try uninstalling it from both, restarting, and letting Windows automatically install the drivers and see what happens. EDIT: Tried it, still doesn't work.

Just uninstall the rosewill drivers then unplug the device. Restart and plug device back in and see if Windows installs the correct ones. Usually the Windows driver will work.

The link for drivers show no Windows 7 support. But the auto install Win 7 drivers should be working.

Others have had problems with that adaptor and Windows 7 so your not alone.

The reviews at Newegg shows that it works for some and not for others with Windows 7. They say the Win 7 drivers worked the first time they tried. Could be a router problem.

Customer Reviews Of Rosewill RNX-N1 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB2.0 Wireless-N 2.0 Dongle (2T2R) Up to 300Mbps Data Rates/ WPA/WPA2 (AES, 64,128-WEP with shared-key authentication) Cisco CCS V1.0, V2.0 and V3.0 compliant/

It does show Windows 7 support. Look at V1.5.1.

It could be a router problem as my router is not only old as hell but it was cheap at the time. But I do have the built in wireless adapter working on my laptop so it definitely is functioning. It's just that the built in wireless adapter I have is kind of garbage when it comes to range so that's why I'm trying to get this one to work, I know it has better range.

And also, this adapter has software that it is meant to work with. I've tried that but that software also considers it disconnected so it doesn't find any networks or anything. The adapter has had no problem running on Ubuntu without the software but it did need the software to run in Vista.

I missed the driver, it's no doubt that same one that Win 7 auto installs which should be working for you.
Most likely the USB adaptor isn't the problem then. It's most likely a router problem like I mentioned before.

What kind of router are you using, model and version number? Your old router may not even be capible of working with wireless N. If you had another more modern router to try out that would be good.

My router is a Linksys WRT54G.

It's worked with this same wireless adapter before in both Ubuntu and Windows Vista.

The WRT54G has been working for some and not for others, 64 bit support is a problem with some of those versions. There are 12 different versions of that same router, some work well with Win 7 and others not so well. Sometimes a firmware update can help. Having the version number of your router would be helpful. ;)

You can try adjusting the mac address clone settings as outlined below but it's hard to say if that is the problem is or not.

I highly doubt it's the router that is causing you grief. It doesn't know what OS you use, all it knows is that it has a network to broadcast and it does so undescriminatly. By nature routers also learns MAC addresses to it know which machines to forward request/replies too. This has to be an adapter/driver issue.

I have 2 PC one running W7 64 bit and the other W7 32 bit

I had been trying to get my Belkin 8055 wireless adaptor to work for weeks with no success.
Although I could see it in Network Connections it would not enable.

I then fould these articles
Windows 7 on wired computer prevents wireless connections to router - windows-7

Disable HomeGroup In Windows 7 [How To] | Windows 7 Customization | Windows Tools, Help & Guides

After disabling HomeGroup the 64 bit PC worked with the wireless adaptor.
I performed the same actions on the 32 bit PC and it still will not enable.
I will continue looking for a solution:confused:

The only problem with that is that I want to stay in my homegroup. I like to stream music from my computer to my Xbox 360 and I do not think that would be possible if I left the homegroup.

I have that problem as well

Using a Rosewill EASYN1 USN adapter on a PC with Win7 64 the adapter always shows up as being disabled, trying to enable does show a window saying "enabling" then "enabled" but the adapter is still disabled.
I tried using the windows, Rosewill drivers and even generic Ralink ones with no change and according to Device Mgr the device is working properly. The Rosewill diags util claims the adapter is OK but disabled [duh] but has no option to toggle that status.
I did try the same adapter on a Win7 32 and XP laptops with no problem as well, it worked with both Windows and Rosewill drivers.
I have not tried the tip about disabling the Homegroups yet but will report the results later.
Any other ideas or inspirations out there.........

Think I have a fix

Right click on the wireless adapter and go to properties.
Look for a kaspersky or aod protocol and disable them.
restart the computer and it should work.
Thanks
