Wireless Connection ONLY 54MBps

I decided to buy a new Router to try and get some quicker speeds, no luck so far, heres what I have.

Qwest DSL modem only 1.5Mbps connect to
A Cisco Linksys E2000 Advanced Wireless-N Router
with a CAT6 cable going between the modem and the router


What am I doing wrong.

Between the router and my DESKTOP computer I get 1 Gbps, but my speed for wireless is still only 54Mbps, I thought I could get this up to 150.

Just to make sure your wireless adapter is wireless N also? If so then you might want to check your wireless settings. I had a similar problem with mine. When in mixed mode it would cut my rate down to 36Mbps instead of 54MBps despite my adapter being G like the router. When I would set it to G only everything was fine. Maybe you're having the same issue.

Yes, my adapter is N, can you set it to just N? I got my speed up to 144, but it says it can go to 300?

What it says and what it does is different unfortunately. There are lots of factors that go into connection speed. That's why they say "up to 300Mbps".

So is it worth it?

I spent 100$ between the cat 6 cable and router. I have the old router which still works, but only gives me 54mbps. But running the speed test gives me the same speeds. Should I just use the old one? Why all the hype about the higher speeds when it doesn't really give you anything extra?

My personal experience of this is that it is only really worth it for a few reasons, Improved stability over distances, Some improvement when gaming and slightly quicker speeds when transferring between PC's this all due to the improved WIFI signal.
It does not improve or help any thing with the connection from the ISP it will only ever be as quick as the data coming in for example i get 1.5Mbs from my isp but most of the downloads are about 900Kps so it is never really going to get near the max speed of the card.

Double check your router settings. In the wireless section look for a bandwidth setting. Too get the full 300MBps it needs to be set for 40MHz. At least thats the case on my D-Link DIR-655. It also uses two wireless channels to get the 300MBps. Keep in mind that the speed shown on the icon in the notifications area is just the Link speed. Its the maximum possible (theoretical) speed that was established during the connection. Mine shows 300 MBps but my true speed is a lot lower than that. Encryption, etc eats up some of your actual data bandwidth. Interference from other networks will also slow things down some too. If all of your wireless devices are N set your router to N only and see if that helps.
