Hi. I'm having problems with my mouse although I can't be sure if it's just a mouse fault or a more serious computer fault. Here's what's happening:

Clicking has no effect unless you click something rapidly for about half a dozen times.
By just moving the mouse (not clicking) it'll highlight the text on webpages, drag taskbar buttons, drag the 'play position' button on a video player etc etc.

Doing a 'left click' on an empty part of the screen can restore normality but usually not for long.

It's a Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard and I've updated the software. My main AV and also Malwarebytes give a clean report. I use Windows 7 64 bit.

Can anyone suggest a cause and cure for this problem? My thanks in advance.

In your mouse settings (type "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items" into your windows explorer address bar and click on the "Mouse" button) make sure ClickLock is turned off (bottom option on first tab); other than that, I got nothing for now.

Hi - system specs now loaded, thanks for the link to that tool. The mouse is a Logitech M-RCE95.

I've been googling this and lots of folk have similar problems but I've yet to see anyone describing a 'fix'. I'm beginning to think I simply need a new mouse...

If you decide to replace your mouse you might like to look at the Logitech Wireless Trackball M570. I recently replaced my old wired trackball mouse with this one & I like it a lot.
Have a look at it on this Logitech website.

I agree with Ranger as there seemed to be a lot of problems with that mouse when I Googled it.

But personally I like Gigabyte (and cabled) mice myself and run the Gigabyte M6900 Optical Gaming Mouse on both my Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge and if you want a laser one then even better is the Gigabyte M6980X Advanced Pro-Laser Gaming Mouse it is not only laser (the very best of mice in my humble opinion) but has a incredible 800 / 1600 / 5600 DPI capability. Plus it beats some of the higher end mice hands down for price.:)

ICit2lol - if I knew you were prepared to go to all that trouble for me, I'd have mentioned the 'combo' fact. I appreciate your efforts though - many thanks. I'd already loaded the newer software but, deep down, knew it wouldn't help as I've happily been using the older version for years.

Must be a case of wear and tear (although the mouse looks fine...). Thanks for the tips, you and Ranger4 - I've just ordered the M570 from Amazon as it has excellent reviews. £24, less than half what Tesco are asking. I don't 'game' so specialist mice aren't a necessity.

Thanks again.

This is a know issue with Logitech mice.

I am a fan of Logitech MX Performance mouse, about once a year I need to get a new one because of the clicker issues. Symptoms: Especially the left clicker is stuck, clicking for instance a browser tab to switch to it suddenly closes the tab because the click is read as a double click. Sometimes clicking on page selects the whole page because a previous click is stuck, causing Windows to select everything between the previous and last clicks as if the left button was kept down when moving the mouse. Moving a window by dragging it from its title bar only moves it an inch then window is dropped although you are still holding the left button down because the clicker releases itself too early.

I have found Logitech support being totally useless in this matter and have given up, keeping now always one new Logitech MX Performance mouse in reserve, to replace the current one when it inevitably breaks down after 6 to 14 months usage.

The second last broken one I was able to repair myself following these instructions, I'm still using it on another computer:

More reading: Logitech Mouse double click issues

A picture I took just now, showing the last broken one (broken few weeks ago) which I will try to repair, together with the current replacement:

The spring (#1) inside the micro switch (#2) is always the culprit.

That's ok mate in fact the micro switches inside some mice are very small indeed and it amazes me how long they do last given the hidings they get.
See the pic in red are the switches and I have seen much smaller than these and the yellow circle is the scroll wheel sensor fitting.
