wireless network flakey after re-install

HI,

I re-installed W7 onto a new SSD and have issues with my wireless connectivity.

I have a ralink 802.11n wireless lan card with 3.0.2.0 driver from 19/6/2009. Device manager doesn't seem to show me the model number.

I use usenet so can normally max out my broadband connection, but what i'm seeing is my computer struggling to reach the full down load speed and failing to maintain a constant speed sometimes dropping out completely for up to a minute. I have a VPN set up so can normally get round any ISP traffic shaping.

I also struggle to watch you tube video at 480p on my desktop but can stream them at 1080p on my lap top from the same room.

I've tried turning off the VPN and firewall on my desktop to rule them out but it doesn't seem to have an effect.

So hopefully I've singled out the wireless card, is ther anything else it could be?

I've updated my wireless driver to v5.0.5.0 using the files on the ralink website buts its not solved the issue.

Any advice or help???

Is this a laptop or desktop? Model #?
Is this a built in wireless adapter, or an add on card?

If it is built in then you should use drivers offered by the laptop or motherboard manufacturer.

If it is an add on card, then I would uninstall the card from device manager, remove any related software, reboot without card physically installed and check for any file remnants, then reinstall the card following the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. In some brands it is important to install the software and drivers first, then shut down and install the card, and restart.

Wireless Network Flakey After Re-Install

I have the Ralink 802.11n WLAN card as well but driver version 3.2.13.0. I think it was offered through Windows Update. Don't know if your OS is Windows 7 but taking a guess....Windows 7 Networking is a nightmare if you ask me. I have searched and searched forums and have contacted my ISP a few times. They've sent me a new Actiontec GT724WG modem/router but I'm not convinced that is the problem. I had a previous post in this forum but closed it. I will have to think about re-posting my info again but not ready to do so just yet. If you search there is not a definite solution for everyone and most give up or do a factory recovery which I am considering doing. I have read also that the factory reset ends up with the same problems and that's why I've come to the conclusion it's a Windows 7 problem, glitch or whatever you want to call it.
