EDIT: Sorry there was an error number: 80070422

Before you judge me too harshly please hear my whole dilemma.

My WLMessenger will not sign in. It is not a problem with a wrong user/pass because I can sign into my hotmail account no problem. There is something wrong with the program itself.

I get this message: "We can't sign you into Windows Live Messenger - Signing into Windows live messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I have googled this and tried the trouble shooting steps here is what I have done so far:

1.) restarted my computer
2.) uninstalled/reinstalled the program and restarted my computer
3.) Followed the steps here which are:
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS

1. Ensure that msnmsgr.exe and wlcomm.exe is completely shut down
a. Go to Task Manager (press Ctrl + Alt + Delete Key to bring up the Task Manager option)
b. Go to Processes tab and look for msnmsgr.exe and wlcomm.exe program
c. If running, right click on the .exe files and select End process

2. Change the Microsoft Windows Explorer settings
a. Go to Start, Run, Type explorer and click OK
b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options in Windows XP
Organize and Folder and Search options in Windows Vista or Windows 7
c. On the View tab, go the advanced settings list
d. Select Show hidden files and folders under Hidden Files and Folders
e. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box
f. Click Ok to close the Folder Options window

3. Based on Windows Live Messenger version, follow the steps below to delete the Contacts cache:

3.1 If you are using Windows Live Messenger 2009, follow these steps to delete Windows Live Contacts Folder:

Windows XP:
a. Go to Start, click on My Computer
b. Browse to the location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows logon name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft
c. Delete Windows Live Contacts folder
d. Browse to the location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows logon name>\Contacts
e. Delete Contacts folder

Windows Vista or Windows 7:
a. Go to Start, click on Computer
b. Browse to the location:
C:\Users\<Windows logon name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft
c. Delete Windows Live Contacts folder
d. Browse to the location, C:\Users\<Windows Logon name>\Contacts
e. Delete Contacts folder

Note: Windows Logon name is the logon name that you use to sign in to Windows Operating system.

3.2 If you are using Windows Live Messenger 2011, follow these steps:

Windows Vista or Windows 7:
a. Go to Start, click on Computer
b. Browse to the location:
C:\Users\<Windows logon name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts
c. Look for the folder which has your email address For example: [email protected] and delete it

Warning! Only delete the folder which has your email address. If you delete other items in the Contacts folder they cannot be recovered.

4. Re-launch Windows Live Messenger and try to Sign-In again

5. Verify that the Date and Time Settings on the computer
a. Follow these steps based on your Operating System version to access the Date and Time Option:

Windows XP
· Go to Start, click on Run and then type Control in the Run window
· In Control Panel; double click on Date and Time

Windows Vista or Windows 7
· Click Start, type date and time in the Start Search box
· Click Date and Time in the Programs list

b. Ensure that the date and time settings are set to the current date, time, and year, and then click OK

If not, click on Change date and time… and set it to the current date and time

6. Verify if Windows Live Messenger is enabled through the firewall

If you are not sure which firewall you have installed on the computer, click Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then scroll through the list of installed programs in Windows XP and in Windows 7, click on Start and Control Panel, and look for Programs and Features to get the list of installed applications. Some popular firewall vendors include Norton, McAfee, and Zone Alarm. Then follow the steps below:
a. Visit this website
b. Click on the link which is applicable to the firewall that you have to follow the steps
Note: Windows Live Messenger application is installed at C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe. Ensure that msnmsgr.exe is allowed in your firewall software. This is only a temporary workaround and you may have to reinstall the firewall software again if none of the above steps works. If you have disabled the firewall in the past, it may still be blocking Windows Live Messenger, try to restart the firewall. After the firewall software is running, make sure that Windows Live Messenger is enabled through the firewall. Also try removing the firewall program that is installed to verify that it is not causing a problem even if it is disabled.

7. Clear the Check for server certificate revocation option in Internet Explorer
a. Start Internet Explorer
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Advanced tab.
d. Under Security, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box.
e. Click Ok
f. Exit Internet Explorer

8. Restart computer and then sign-in to Windows Live Messenger again

Nothing has worked thus far and I would appreciate any direction on this dilemma. Thank you very much :)

EDIT: Sorry there was an error number: 80070422

...

Windows Update error 80070422, 80244019, or 8DDD0018

If you receive one of these errors while downloading updates, the most common cause is a computer virus that has turned off Windows Update, or another service on your computer that is needed by Windows Update

-DG
I can confirm that Avast Internet Security says that I have no viruses(I am very fastidious about that) and that windows update components are not running.

Durr

Well... I feel kind of dumb now but I finally figured it out after trying to install another messenger and it also didn't work.

I had disabled the Windows Live Messenger Startup Assistant from starting up when my computer boots. That was it. For some reason it effects not only the WLMessenger but all messengers on my laptop.

So I just went into my Services and browsed around until I found the little culprit. Thanks for everyone's input and thanks to me for solving it. :p
