wmp doesn't display subtitles

I am trying to see a movie (mkv file) with srt subtitles on windows media player - Windows 7 32 bit Home but I cannot.
I have searched all the internet and tried different solutions but still no result.

I have also installed and uninstalled various codecs and programs. Now I have installed Windows7codecs pack.
The movie file and srt file are the same name.

Please help me. I have tried for many many hours and I am really frustrated.

have you tried to view it in wmc ,or used another media player like splash player or VLC, trying with another media player will rule out the srt file is at fault.
