WMP Music Llibrary Screen Wouldn't Display-Nothing Found Posted Worked

My WMP 12.0, latest update, worked fine until a week or so ago. Recently I added a subfolder for a folder already in the library, not sure if that caused a problem or not. But suddenly it recognized only a few files (possibly the new folder), and when trying to bring up the Manage Libraries screen in WMP nothing happens. I've tried everything I could find in this forum but with no change:

1. Deleted the libraries so it would rebuild. (Stop WMP services, delete files, restart WMP services). No change.
2. Deleted the Media Player folder, similar to above but entire folder. No change.
3. Restored an older library - library came up, still no Organize/Manage Libraries screen, and then most of music disappeared quickly.
4. Unchecked WMP in the Windows Features control panel, rebooted, checked again so it would reinstall WMP. No change.
5. Removed all libraries from Music (outside of WMP, right click on music library properties). No change.

Note: I just fixed this while writing this up! It occurred to me that after I'd done all the above I had not tried added back folders to the Music Librarty outside of WMP (by right clicking on Music and selecting Properties). When I did that, in WMP the Organize/Manage Libraries screen came back up as normal. Go figure.

This may belong in another thread - I am new to this forum and couldn't seem to find the appropriate thread. Sorry if I've caused extra work, but I did want to go ahead and post as this was a bizarre fix....

Broke again

This has again happened to me, only this time my 'sort of' fix didn't work. I am at a loss for things to try. Any help would be so appreciated!!! May be time to dump WMP, if so, what should I replace it with? I just need basic features that will play MP3 and WMA files and create and transfer playlists to portable MP3 devices...

This didn't work, nor did anything else I tried of course. Installed Media Monkey, which works fine. However, yesterday I was having some long-term trouble with my backup software, and a customer service representative from Acronis took control of my machine. I watched him turn on about 8 or so services that were set to manual instead of automatic - none of which were the obvious WMP-associated ones. I asked him what he was doing and got a vague answer, just that it was better if these services are set to automatic instead of manual. All his work did not fix my Acronis problem. But it occurred to me this morning to try WMP. Yep, it fixed it - when I right clicked on Music Library, the proper screen with the proper folders appeared, and WMP immediately has started rebuilding the library.

Alas, I don't know what fixed this. I'll talk to Acronis again and ask the rep, but I doubt if he remembers exactly what he clicked. I guess all I can do is take a picture of the settings for the record unless someone here has an idea what it could have been. If you want to venture a guess, I'll turn the service off and see what happens. Seems like this would be very good knowledge to have!

Hum Pamela well mate if he cannot remember then I would say (and I am no expert) that he / she would be a bit slack - that's is is if whoever it was works for Acronis. It would be like your doctor giving you a number of pills that cure you and not knowing which one - or two that did the job:sarc:

But I suppose it is fixed that is all that matters. Myself I keep my music on a separate hard drive to the SSD boot and just "import" what I want when I want it as I don't understand why I should need fancy programs to do that. :)

Well, he was not commissioned to fix WMP, LOL. Actually I haven't talked to him again. I will ask him if he remembers which ones he reset, but there were so many I'd be surprised if he did.

I do keep my music on a different disk and in fact keep all my data separate from the operating system and software. My WMP needs are really simple: I just want to use it to put music and books on my phone and MP3 player. But even a simple import would not work before today. It's not excellent software, LOL, as I've had trouble with it for years. If iTunes would put music on non-apple players I'd just use it, sigh.
