Lately I've been getting this message a lot (I try to play a movie and after trying for a while it says there's a "server execution failed"). When this happens I can't even start WMP (I click the icon in the bar, it becomes "bold" like an active application icon, and after a while reverts back to "inactive" state. No server execution failed message though). Restarting Windows fixes the problem but only for a short time.

I'm using the release candidate of Windows 7.

Hmm... I opened Task Manager and noticed that WMP actually is running, so I killed it and tried to start it- it worked. Still though, I'd love to know what causes it to hang in hte first place.

I would start by looking at the type of file you are trying to run when it brings up this error message. Is it an AVI, DIVX, MP3, MP4, MKV, OGG?? If its something you had to install a code back for then I would start by looking there. By uninstalling the code pack and then rebooting and reinstalling the pack. Something might have gotten messed up in the install. I had some quick problems with MKV at first but onces I removed it and reinstalled it worked fine.

No it's definitely not codec related. When this happens it doesn't matter what file I'm trying to play, they all fail the same way. Also, re installing the codec pack didn't help.

Im also having this problem with 7260. Its been fine for ages but over the past few weeks i see it more and more. Ive not installed any codec packs but do have CoreAVC for use with MPC.
Im only trying to play .mov files as MPC does all my other files better.
WMP12 seems to play the first file fine but if i then close WMP12 and double click another file i get the spinning cursor for a while and then the error message.
I dont really use WMP12 much but it is annoying.

Sounds like WMP12 isnt shutting down properly the first time.

dave.

WMP12 fails on corrupted mp4 videos. Try the k-lite codec pack and keep the file associations for the WMP12 if you prefer.
In my notebook I have the k-lite along with my WMP12 (I hate the plain look of MPC) and CoreAVC and everything works like a charm (do not forget to get the latest driver for your video card).

I have the same problems on my Windows 7 x64 build 7600. The first mediafile plays perfectly, then I close wmp. After that any mediafile, mp3, avi, divx does not play. Error message: There is a probleam playing this file in Windows Media Player. A reboot of the system solves it temperaly. Stopping the wmp service does not.

On my mediacenter Windows 7 I86 (also build 7600) there are no problems. I changed the default player from 32-bit to 64-bit and back, but no result.
No messages in the logs.

So I'm curious, does everybody have this problem? Or are there systems without this problems?

Ive use CoreAVC pro and MPC but thats not MY issue.
I also get this with MP3's as well as Divx files.

Actually since i re installed HP last week ive not had any problems with WMP12.

I have had the same problem since I've installed a fresh copy of Win 7 Professional 64-bit. All I've tried to do is open an mp3 file and then it sits there for about 2 minutes and then that error pops up...anybody know of a fix for this?

Does this happen with all MP3s? It seems that MP does not manage well cases with corrupted media content.
I would do:
1. Get the latest drivers for the hardware used (audio and video).
2. Update your windows.
3. Get a codec pack (k-lite works fine for me).
Before step 3, take ownership of the preferred codecs in the registry (it may happen that the codec pack does not install correctly). To do this:
Open up Registry Editor as admin and take ownership with administrators and then full control with administrators of the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectShow\Preferred
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectShow\Preferred

Then install your desired codec pack.

To solve this problem I shut down firewall and removed outpost...
It works 100 %

Having myself had the server execution error, I did some thinking and searching around, and the whole bit on restarting WMP 12, is pointless and a waist of time. For me, not saying it will work for everyone, though my best bet for sure would be to check your antivirus software. I downloaded avast anti not too long ago, and it ran a virus scan.. Right after that. I could no longer use my WMP. I removed the antivirus and reinstalled it, and everything has been working just fine. Best of luck to you, and let me know if this was also your problem too.
