I am a Word/Office Luddite who prefers Office 2000. It does what I want and most often I can do it without spending time 'learning' how an 'improved version' does it 'differently.'

I regularly copy and paste text that contains italics, so I do not want to resort to using paste special - unformatted text in this instance. I set Word to display all formatting marks. Recently I encountered a different character that stands in for a space. It kind of looks like a 'degrees' symbol. Here's a snip:

What do I call these, marks, how do I invoke them in 'Find and Replace' in Word 2000?

thanks

The easy way to search for these marks is to highlight one of them, then choose COPY. Now open the Find and Replace window, and paste it into the Find field. Now click Search.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I tried that technique and it results in the equivalent of a 'paste special unformatted text' 'dot' character and every space is found. That is why I included the snip.

Had you tried searching Character Map for the symbol? That is a good way to visually search for a symbol you need to include in a document. Once you found it, Copy it from Character Map and Paste into your Word document.

Solved

Thank you, Snick and Iko22,

I thought I'd tried Snick's solution before posting and it failed to find the Nonbreaking Spaces. It was a busy day, but I eventually came back to the thread and tried it once more. I even made a copy of the Find and Replace screen to show that it 'was not working' for me. I am pleased to report that now it does. MS won't like it, but being able to do this in Word 2000 simply reinforces my dependence on this 'archaic' word processor.

Iko, I'd not heard of Character Map. I've saved a copy of the current wiki entry along with this thread so I can find the solution again.

I wish I still had access to Word Basic. I got a copy of Woody Leonard's book and found it an intuitive way to create macros. Perhaps it is because in the late 60's I used Basic on a GE timeshare server in LA using a Teletype with punched paper tape to communicate from Vancouver, BC.

I've never managed to master VBA. Years ago I had a simple macro that allowed me to assign an unused keystroke to invoke "Paste Special/Unformatted" which I used all the time. I managed to lose it when I upgraded my machine and/or moved to Win7. Periodically I've searched for and tried to follow instructions for using code provided on a forum but it never works for me. Perhaps it is because I'm an 'Old Dog' and not a 'Gnu' so I cannot learn 'Gnu tricks?'

Thanks for your help and patience,
baumgrenze

You might want to check out the degree sign, which is character 00B0 on Character Map.
