I have a WRVS4400N router. I'm not sure how to enable ipv6 on this router, it still says 0/10 even though the router is supposedly capable..

thanks for the replys i thought the post would bring some interest for everyone google does a good job of explaining about it considering there are a lot of internet websites trying it.this will be a move in the right direction for ipv.

(I have nothing against the site or registration in principle - especially if its free but I don't really want to register on 1000's of sites that I might only ever use a few times).

Hi all
I wouldn't worry too much yet (individual subscribers who connect to the Internet via a home router / cable and a broadband ISP).


Your IP will remain IPV4 for a considerable while -- the ISP will have "Mapping software/ hardware " to convert IPV6 <===IPV4====>

Duplicate IPV4 addresses could be handled the same way as existing phone numbers -- you often have identical telephone numbers -- apart from the AREA CODE.

You could do the same with IPV4 -- add an invisible index prefix to resolve "duplicates". The DSN server (at the ISP) will receive and direct requests to the appropriate site(s).

I'm not sure exactly how they will handle the change over but it will have to be done something like this since it will take MANY MANY years to switch everyone over to full native IPV6. Meanwhile they will have to maintain backward compatability for "Donkeys years" yet.

For people working in IT for large organisations or telcos then that's another question entirely -- but I'm sure they will (if they haven't already) got plans in place for the transition.

This should be interesting, the infrastructure here runs about 10 years behind, only time will tell.

At default I get 10/10 for Ipv4 and 0/10 for IPv6.

It is quite easy to create an IPv6 tunnel though, and then configure you're machine to use OpenDNS's Ipv6 servers. That then results in 10/10 for both tests.

Check out Hurricane Electric Free IPv6 Tunnel Broker to create a tunnel.

To be honest. I wouldn't do anything if I were you. Much may change before you have a need to be IPv6 enabled. Your ISP may be the issue at this time as well, as they aren't pressured to make IPv6 available yet.

1. No, if you're ISP isn't IPv6 ready then you can set up an Ipv6to4 tunnel as long as your router supports Protocol 41 forwarding. In most cases it's a simple firmware upgrade, although some routers may need to be replaced. If you're interested check out Hurricane Electric Free IPv6 Tunnel Broker
2. Check out Test your IPv6. to test you're IPv6 readiness. As I said though, even if you're not IPv6 ready, a tunnel will give you Ipv6

No, I have the same router. We'll all be buying new ones when we need to start using IPv6. See this, it's not just our old Linksys routers:

Even if your ISP switches to IPv6 and you have a router that can handle IPv6 you need to make sure that your firewall can handle IPv6.

The Windows 7 firewall can. However, it is my understanding that some third party Firewalls are not yet compatible with IPv6.

So if using IPv6 and another Firewall besides the Windows Firewall I think that you need to make sure that it is compatible with IPv6. That is my understanding.
