i cant format the flashdrive of my friend because it will prompt "disk is write-protected". There is no switch in it and i think it is a virus, because it was loaded with a bunch of shortcuts and error file names. I tried using Malwarebytes and Avast but still after reboot it is still there and write protected. I tried removing it manually using a CMD and showing hidden files but i cant even hit the delete button key on my keyboard. There is no delete option either when i right-clicked my mouse. I also tried in registry the StorageDevicePolicies but it is already set to "0".

Anyone suggestions?

Can you try this drive on another computer? Does it still show the read-only symptom?

If yes, it's possible the drive's simply going bad.

Eject the drive, if necessary, then remove and re-insert the drive. Right click on the drive (in Windows Explorer) then click Properties. Select the Security tab and take ownership after selecting your user id. Be sure to check Full Control. Apply and OK out. You may have to have Administrator privileges. You should be able format it then.

Forgot to mention: If you don't sign in (that is, you use the default user), be sure to sellect that user when you take ownership.

Another suggestion :): Download the Apacer Formatting Utility, Unzip this utility to a folder on your hard disk, preferably on a folder on desktop screen for easy access (Do Not Try To Save it on pen drive). Keep your pen drive plugged in, and double click on the Start.bat file in the folder where you unzipped the above utility. This will start formatting your pen drive, wait till the formatting completes and the LED on your pen drive stops blinking. Remove your pen drive after that and plug it in again.

EDIT: All told, what I do understand from the numerous posts on the subject is that if the HP Format tool can't put your pendrive right, it is almost certain that your pendrive is dead. The other one that is put on a pedestal in this repect is the EaseUS Partition Master. http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Another method:

1. Shutdown your computer or laptop
2. Insert USB Memory Stick into your laptop or Computer
3. Turn on computer and then immediately start pressing (F8) key then Advanced Boot Options screen will come up
4. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt
5. After loading files if your USB Memory Stick drive letter is (G) for example then write as
6. C:\windows\system32>G: and press enter
7. G:\>format G: and press enter
8. If ask you (Y/N) then press (Y) and press enter
9. Now a full format will start which remove write protection from USB Memory Stick.

The only thing I would add to the above is that before Step 7 check to be sure that the drive letter you are using is actually the memory stick. You can check that by:

  • Be sure the prompt shows G:\ in the path.
  • Type DIR and then ENTER
Check the results to be sure that G: (assuming that G: is the drive letter that is normally assigned to the stick) has the folders that are on the memory stick and not one of your hard drive partitions.
