Good - the logs are a LOT cleaner now!
Unfortunately, they are so clean that they don't tell me much :(

Please open Device Manager.
Set it to View > Show Hidden Devices

Are there any items showing with red or yellow 'flashes? - if so, what?

Just poking around:

Code:
09/07/2013 05:46 139,776 BUILTIN\Administrators cryptnet.dll
05/10/2013 20:25 1,474,048 BUILTIN\Administrators crypt32.dll
07/07/2014 02:06 187,904 BUILTIN\Administrators cryptsvc.dll
09/07/2013 05:52 224,256 BUILTIN\Administrators wintrust.dll

cryptsvc.dll : 6.1.7601.18526
crypt32.dll : 6.1.7601.18277
cryptnet.dll : 6.1.7601.18205
wintrust.dll : 6.1.7601.18205

cryptsvc.dll looks like it's from kb3004394 based on date ( despite repeated attempts to use kb3024777 in the past to fix it ) - the other dlls are considerably order. Quite apart from possible 3004394 breakages, are those being from different builds going to cause major problems like this?

Sorry to jump the gun a bit, but I have to give the machine back quite soon. I copied those particular dlls off my own PC & reran WU, and it managed to install all 64 pending updates. I don't know if it's fixed the random "Not Activated" dialog yet, I'll have to leave it a while.

Of course now I have to fix the fact the DLLs won't register ( regsvc32 gives "the module cryptsvc.dll was loaded but the entry-point DLLregisterserver was not found" errors ) and who knows what sfc is going to find yet, but at least it's movement...

This is looking promising! could I get someone to look over the latest logs please? sfc came up clear on the console & windows update appears to be working, I'd just like to check there's no nasty surprises waiting to pop out later.

Right, had to give the box back - seems issue free although I'd still appreciate a check of the files.

Thanks for the assistance all.
