x64 Apps launch, *all* fail to open (not responding) *any* image files

Along with the usual "Not Responding" issues for Windows Explorer, and most if not all apps...

Due to near constant "not responding", freezing, & crashes of Windows Photo Viewer I ran an "Upgrade Install" with a Win 7 op sys disk. Following this action, Windows Photo Viewer, Photoshop, Paint are unable to open ANY image files. The app launches, "Not Responding" appears, file never opens. Multiple Alt F-4, and/or multiple closing attempts with Task Manager usually closes the app. Rebooting is occasionally necessary.

System File Checker detects no issues
Checkdisk OK
Defrag Completed
RegClean run
Malwarebytes Antimalware run
BitDefender 11 run and then uninstalled to avoid possible compatibility issues

I have no desire to format and reinstall opsys, but that appears to be my best option...

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

You can use the offline updates and security only updates MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Did you try to open an image file from a USB flash disk?

Forgot to mention that. Surprisingly, all updates installed without issues.

Did you try to open an image file from a USB flash disk?

Yes. Also from a DVD. Neither worked.

JPGs, PNGs, GIFs all display as icons in Windows Explorer.

Hello Roy, thanks for the reply.

Isn't KB947821 used for update problems? As I stated in my reply to Mega, I was able to install all updates without problems.

I don't think it could do any harm, so it is currently running...

It just stopped, and is displaying this message: "Installer encountered an error: 0xc80003f6"

Hi Tom,

SURT is not just an update repair tool. Allthough it reports problems with them, the errors have a roll-on effect on how other programs work.

Now as to why it failed - that error code relates to a memory problem, not the physical RAM, but how much your system allocates to functions, via the Pagefile size - Its best to let the system do it for you.

What 3rd Party program did you use - we DO NOT recommend thier use, they cause more problems than they fix, if you can REVERT any changes it made.

My Virtual Memory has the "Automatically manage paging file size..." box checked. It has been checked for as long as I can remember, so it shouldn't be a factor.

Total paging file size for all drives
Minimum allowed: 16MB
Recommended: 12285MB
Currently allocated: 8190MB

OK. I have reverted to the last "Upgrade Install" with no changes to the current issues.

I wondered if Windows automatic allocation of page file size was not functioning, leaving me short on memory, so I manually changed the page file size to 16GB. With this accomplished I was able to run KB947821 to completion, and it installed a number of updates.

Still having problems with "Not Responding" issues for all programs, and jpg, png, gif files do not open in Photo Viewer, Photoshop or Paint.

A long time ago, I have read that the best thing was to set Virtual memory to a fix value (min=Max) so, as I have 8G of memory, I have set Virtual memory to 16G, Max and min. Never had any problem.

Yes, as stated in the previous, and the original message, the original problem is still present. That is, I still cannot open any image files with any program.

Thanks Megahertz, but as stated earlier - already done. At least twice. It reports "problems were found, but not all were fixed."

I still can't open any image with Windows Photo Viewer, Photoshop or Paint.

They were uninstalled quite some time ago as part of the diagnostic process.

I ran this quite a while ago with no issues, and I tried it again per your suggestion. "No memory issues were detected."

well that made for intreresting reading.
most especially you appear to be running a non-genuine OS, theres an activation exploit showing.
The W7 Iso was downloaded from a russian torrent site, if this included the exploit then i suggest you get hold of another copy, ands if the exploit was included what else was!!!!.

As this forum does not support piracy, Rule 4- no further help can br provided until a genuine product is in use .
