XFX ATI Radeon HD 5830 stops responding

Hello

I have suffered from a re-occurring problem; during gaming (BF2, APB, Mount & Blade) display freezes for 4-5 seconds then goes either black, grey , brown and then either the computer freezes, the game crashed or the game refreshes after showing a windows alert stating 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered'.
I have tried a multitude of fixes:
- ATI Overdrive : clocking the memory and GPU down
- Memtest on the RAM
- removing Overclock from system

Until now, I have had no success and the problem continues to ruin my experience with a new computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

I have just done a quick search and a few people have complained about the same issue. One person on the AMD forums claims to have fixed it with a driver update. Try removing the drivers and the Catalyst Control Center software and install the latest drivers / Catalyst Control Center and installing the latest drivers from here: ATI Catalystâ„¢ Display Driver.

Thanks for the reply Ross, tried what you suggested, wiped the driver and software clean and re-installed and ran any game to test. Within 5 minutes the fault occurred again. Any other solutions would be appreciated

Sorry to hear about your "Display stopped responding and recovered" issue. Have a look at this and see if it helps. It's a snip from my Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

Error - Driver Stopped Responding And Recovered (ATI) or Display Driver nvlddmkm stopped responding (Nvidia) – Do any type of search on these errors and you will get hundreds of hits, even here. This issue started out in Vista and is now seen in Windows 7. As you see, it affects both card manufactures. There are many theories on the causes, as well as solutions, to this problem, but no singular fix seems to work for all. While one fix might work for some, others find they don't work at all. I will however suggest you look at…

-a- Overclocking – If your system is over clocked, chances are that you card is as well. Or, you may be simply overclocking the card by itself. Either way, back off and see what happens.

-b- Overheating – The card could simply be overheating from a faulty or low running fan, to the thermo past on the heat sink wearing out or being inadequate for the job. Inspect the video card and insure everything is in good working order and that there are no loose parts.

-c- Case Cooling – If your case is small and cramped or has inadequate ventilation or fans, well, not only will the case get hot, but so will the components inside, including the CPU and GPU, which puts out enough heat on their own!!! Plus overclocking also causes heat!!! Something to think about.

-d- Power supply - Many of today's GPU's require at least a 450 watt power supply. Is your power supply adequate for the job? Check with the card manufacture. Also, If the card requires a power connection (4-pin connector) double check to make sure it's connected!

I have the Same Problem you do Supersoni, But I got this after Installing Windows 7 and Installing a XFX 5770. I called XFX and they told me to send it back so its gone. I put my 9800 gtx+ and I have not seen that Error anymore. I had thought that there might be Problem with Windows 7 and the ATI Drivers I downloaded , but I say that Nvida was having the same Problem. Plus I reinstalled the 9800gtx card and I have not seen that Error anymore. Maybe this is only Happens on the Newer cards 400s and the 5000s series ? I just want a Fix I dont want to go back XP

Actually it's been a problem mainly since Vista's release. Here's one of my posts back in 2008 with an ATI 3870 card - “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” - Rage3D Discussion Area.

If you've read the post above you'll see that this issue occurs with Nvidia as well. And as I've said before, there are many theories on the causes, as well as solutions, to this problem, but no singular fix seems to work for all. While one fix might work for some, others find they don't work at all.

However I personally believe it has somehing to to with the way Microsoft's TDR model works under Win 7 & Vista... Timeout Detection and Recovery of GPUs through WDDM. It seems to be extremely sensitive to the GPU's ability to complete a task...

Timeout detection: The Video Scheduler component of the Windows Vista graphics stack detects that the GPU is taking more than the permitted quantum time to execute the particular task and tries to preempt this particular task. The preempt operation has a "wait" timeout—the actual "TDR timeout." This step is thus the "timeout detection" phase of the process. The default timeout period in Windows Vista is 2 seconds. If the GPU cannot complete or preempt the current task within the TDR timeout, then the GPU is diagnosed as hung.

Now, what causes these hangs to occur is a matter of debate, but the end result, whether ATI or Nvidia, is the dreaded....

With that said, I will note that quite a few people, including me, have noticed that replacing the video card solves the problem, so....
