Solved XFX HD 6770 and Acer Monitor on DVI - Input not supported.

OK, so I just did a major upgrade to my computer. New CPU, motherboard, ram, and graphics card. Everything is working great except my acer AL1916W monitor. I have it plugged in to the DVI port on my new XFX HD 6770, but the only resolution I can get working is 640x480 (actually, if I use the AMD Vision Engine Control Center with the HDTV support option, I can also get 720p60 working with it). Any other resolutions and the monitor just says "Input not supported"

The monitor's native resolution is 1440x900, and it was working fine this morning on my old Geforce 9800gt (with DVI)

I tried plugging it in to the VGA port as well, and it seemed to work fine with that, the only problem is, I have a second monitor, and the only input it supports is VGA, and the XFX card only has one VGA port, so I cant have both monitors using VGA...

I have the latest CCC drivers and stuff. I just cant figure out what is wrong...

Give another shot at installing the latest drivers for the new card.
ATI Catalyst

If you have created any multi-monitor profiles delete them before installing the new driver.

this is not normal behavior but it seems more software than hardware.
the newer ati cards prefer you use the catalyst center for everything multiple monitor related. and it will actually freak out sometimes if you try to mess with it from the windows display options.

Nope, didn't fix anything

When I go in to the Vision Engine Control Center properties for the monitor, it tells me the maximum reported resolution is 640x480, which obviously isn't correct.

I also tried with only the Acer monitor plugged in (still in the DVI port) and it still didn't work. Although, like I said in my first post, it works fine using VGA. Unfortunately, I don't have (easy) access to any other DVI monitors, so I can't check to see if they work. I did test the HDMI port using my TV though, and it is working fine.

Also, apparently 720x480 also works, so that makes it 640x480, 720x480, and 1280x720. Everything else that I tried just came up with the "Input not supported" screen on my monitor. :/

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Are we using the same dvi cable for all of this? If so you can get one pretty cheap these days might be worth checking, has that same cable been in use since that 9800 you mentioned was new? If so it's probably not even dual link.
outside of that I would write xfx they usually aren't too bad with support.
I can't reproduce your exact circumstances here but I do have a 5850 I had a dual monitor setup on it was plug in play pretty much only asking me where the monitors were physically located in relation to one another.
It is possible you got a card with a problem, that's a very strange way to present a hardware problem though.
If you are absolutely certain of the monitor's resolution you know you can always try forcing it. There shouldn't be any risk of damage so long as you are in the right hz range and resolution.

It's late maybe someone will hope by with more thoughts...

I have tried two different DVI cables, but both are from around the same time, and they are only single-link. Would a dual link cable fix the problem?

And how would one go about forcing a resolution?

Have you installed the monitor driver yet?

Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Monitor / AL Series / AL1916W

A lot of monitors won't run at the correct resolution(s) without it.

I tried, but windows won't let me install it... Apparently it isn't designed for 64-bit systems.
