xfx radeon 6770 idle at 78C

I just bought the xfx amd radeon hd 6770 and it has been idling at 78 degrees Celsius, i have all the latest drivers and all the fans in my computer are super clean but I can't get the temperature to go down. I have a brand new Antec EarthWatts EA-650 650W Power Supply, and an amd phenom X6 processor. Whenever I play a game, even something like portal, it overheats and I get bsod.

Does the fan(s)on the GPU run at all? Have you tried to manually control the fan speed with in CCC? Make sure that the GPU is fully seated into PCIe slot and that the power connection is fully seated.

Your temp is all right. XFX are build to run on higher temps than the other versions. I ave an easy trick for you, open CCC and Agree on Overdrive option. Now turn down the settings the temp should drop 20 C.

Btw Ave you checked the GPU Fan itself? Is it really clean inside?

No, no it is not. It's far from all right. 78c is fine for load temps - but not for idle.

Between 30-60c depending on location (ambient), airflow and the amount of mismatched monitors (triggers higher 2D/3D clock speed) is okay for idle.

At 78c idle - it's no wonder the PC is BSODing at load. The temps must be well over 100c and far past the thermal throttle limit.

Op is this card new or 2nd hand?

Try what BF suggested - reseat the card, make sure it's plugged in correctly and that the fan is indeed running.

If the fan isn't running, return it. It's faulty.

If it's new and the fan is running - return it. It's faulty.

If it's 2nd hand - there may be a shed load of dust on the cooler itself.

Use a torch to peer inside. If it is dusty inside, you can either use compressed air to try and blow the dust out, or remove the shroud completely and clean it that way.

Or try and get your money back.

My XFX 5770 idles at 42°C, so 78°C is not normal.

Go with smarteyeball's suggestions.

Alright, I returned the card and got a new one, plus an extra fan and I cleaned out everything again. It's now idling around 55-60 which If I'm not mistaken should be ok.

Hi, can you tell us which cabinet are you using? As per my knowledge 55-60 at idle is also high. As, it might reach 80-90 at load.

I am using 6870 and it is 34-39 idle and 55-61 at load. A good cabinet sure helps to keep the temps down.

Its just the one the Asus Essentio cm1730 came with.

That is the main issue. You have a standard cabinet, it does not have enough cooling required for the card and the hardware. I will suggest to buy a coolermaster HAF 912, 922 or 932 (whichever you can get). This will lower down the temps substantially. You will see the idle temps between 34-38.
