XP drivers for dual boot Win 7 and XP

My XP CD does not support my SATA controller which STANDARD AHCI 1.0 SERIAL ATA CONTROLLER. MY BIOS ALSO ONLY HAS OPTION FOR IDE NOT ATA. MY SATA controller shows driver files (4 files) atapi.sys,ataport.sys,msahci.sys,pciidex.sys. - what's the best way to find alternate SATA drivers for XP?

Go to the Support Downloads webpage for your PC or Sata controller to look for an XP driver. If none google to see if anyone else has found one.

I found the system is using amdsata driver for the Gateway laptop. Should I download the amd_sata.sys version 1.2.001.321 for XP? I was able to copy the Win7 driver version using AMD Vision Engine Control Center. Gateway does not have any drivers for the sata controllers listed on their web site. The system is using a Gateway motherboard with AMD processor. Gateway SJV70-SB motherboard

I found a good XP install CD that let's me install XP but I then cannot boot into XP even after using EasyBCD's settings.

1. I updated MBR to show Win 7 and XP
2. restarted system but do not see options for Win7/XP boot
3. System just restarts into Win 7
4. EasyBCD does allow me to set the settings for XP using Win7

I also found drivers for the system which should work for XP if I can get system set up and XP installed.

Any suggested on what could be the issue?

HD does have the correct partition for XP at this point and I allocated 146GB for XP

XP does not complete the install after the system restarts only goes into a loop. I also looked the reference you mentioned to the system repair and noticed the following:

1. my hard drive shows the system reserved as active primary partition
2. C: drive shows primary ( not active ) - Win7 Pro
3. E: drive shows logical drive ( not active ) - XP
4. OS Win7 Pro (64bit) XP Pro (32bit) platform

Does my XP E: partition need to be reset to show primary instead of logical?

What am I missing with this set up? I can send you screenshots if necessary

It would have been so much simpler to install XP Mode. Why are you jumping thru so many hoops to setup dual boot?

XP Mode works fine on this system. I was just hoping the dual boot would not be a major challenge since others have set it up on new systems. Here's where I am now with the dual boot. I cannot seem to complete the XP install when the system restarts, I now see dual boot option but cannot finish XP set up.

1. dual boot option shows XP and Win7
2. enter XP and see logo
3. system restarts and goes into same loop
4. Win7 boots fine if I use the option

Any suggestions?

Also tried XP repair but this is not option since XP did not complete install completely

I decided to remove Win 7 from the system and start with XP. I have XP Pro 64 CD but get the following message after copying files to set up XP.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please re-install a copy of the above file

1. System copies files and then restarts to install XP
2. I get this error message

Any suggestions?

Why would you replace the best OS ever with a dead OS that has no support and won't even install on most modern hardware?

If you have a Recovery partition that still works then boot it to reinstall Win7, or do the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and virtualize XP as advised repeatedly.

If you've already removed Win7 and it's Recovery partition, or the Recovery partition does not boot anyway, then wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command to try XP install.

If error continues then try another XP installer for your licensed version - OEM or retail sku.

I resolved this issue by installing XP on the C: partition and removing Win7 from the system. Since this is a brand new quad core system, XP MUST be installed first for the dual boot. I hope this information helps anyone who tries to downgrade a new computer. XP Pro did not install on the system due to the C: partition. I also was able to get the drivers for the system.

error

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

This error has many articles but my experience clearly shows, the C: partition should be used to re-install XP.
Thank you for all of the information on this issue. I decided just to keep XP on the system and not perform dual boot.
