janic I see what you are referring to. For future noobs that read the prescription, however, it would be good to update the instructions to reflect each step that must be taken on current Win7 control panels. Otherwise it will just create churn.

Also - if the printer is hung on the network, merely adding the IP String [add TCP/IP port] won't pull a driver unless there is some magic I know not of. I'm wondering if the address will "stick" or will you get a hard error? My hope is that the address will be seen as valid and then one will need to go lookup the driver from the vendor/maker's Download page, and run the install. If you have more clarity on this pls post back.

Windows (any version) will actually prompt for a driver if it can't find one from the base installation.

My original instructions are I think reasonably clear and have worked for a lot of people.

When the printer is set up on the CLIENT machine i.e the one WITHOUT the printer physically attached to it Windows will prompt you for a driver if it can't find one in the standard Windows installation.

Note -- a W7 x-64 client needs an X-64 driver even if the printer is attached to an XP system or as on a network with its own IP address.


Similarly a CLIENT XP system / W7 x86 system needs a 32 bit driver even if connecting to a printer attached to a W7 x-64 bit machine.

I did get the computers to talk, I got the 7 printer to print to the XP que but no paper ever comes out. It totally gets stuck in que, and I'm at a loss as to what to do other than get a new printer.

Yes, they are on the same workgroup, win 7 can see it. Yes, I know how to add a network printer manually. The issue is either a driver or port issue. I tell the XP machine where the printer is, it goes to install the driver and that's as far as I get. It tells me it's the wrong driver. I have installed the XP driver and the win 7 driver on the XP machine. On the win 7 machine I have the win 7 driver (it would not accept the XP driver on the Win 7 machine).
Suggestions anyone? Thanks!

the Win 7 machine won't load 32 bit driver

When attempting to load the 32 bit driver on the Win 7 machine (the one WITH the printer attached) it says something like,"this program is for 32 bit intel compatible platform only. the process has been terminated". If I go into the printer properties and attempt to load additional drivers, there isn't an option to load a 32 bit. There is Itanium and X86 and the 32 bit driver will not load under either of those headings. SO... how do I load the 32 bit driver on the Win 7 machine so my XP machine can print to it?

I appreciate all the above instructions but there is obviously no way the XP machine will ever print to the printer that's on the WIN7 machine. I've loaded best I can the drivers on all machines. When adding the printer the the XP machine I get as far as "You are about to connect to a printer that will automatically install a print driver..." Then I click YES and it says "the server for the Canon printer does not have the correct printer driver installed". So, I guess there is no way to correctly install the X86 driver on the WIN 7 machine.

one last brief note...

when attempting to load 32 bit driver on Win 7 machine, I get this; "The specified location does not contain the driver Canon Inkjet Pixma ip6000d for the requested specified architecture". No matter what I try, Windows 7 will not accept the 32 bit driver knowing that it is for a 32 bit machine. If anyone knows how to install a 32 bit driver on Win 7, please fill me in.

Here is how you make this work. It is a bit of work but will work.

Step 1: Connect the printer to the Windows 7 64-bit machine, install all drivers make sure it prints correctly, test everything.
Step 2: Disconnect the printer from Windows 7 machine.
Step 3: Directly Connect the printer to the USB port on the next machine, install all drivers (32bit or 64bit) make sure it prints correctly test everything.
Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for all computers you want to print to this printer.
Step 5: Connect the printer to the machine you want to use as the PRINT SERVER. Test the printer and share it.
Step 6: Add the printer as you have tried before, HOWEVER, take the drivers from your LOCAL machine NOT from the machine you are using as the PRINT SERVER, the correct drivers are ALREADY on your machine and you know they work because you tested the printer.

Please NOTE: This is a huge NOTE. Check out all the other threads on Windows 7 and Windows XP printing with a shared printer via USB. You will find there are many many issues with this and your best bet is to buy a USB to Network device and add the printer directly to your home network. Search the forum for them, I have even posted in many of them.

FIXED!

Seems like the issue was the fact that I was attempting to install the 32 bit driver on the win 7 machine (that has the printer attached) so my 32 bit XP machine could print to it. What I needed to do was install the XP 64 bit driver on my Win 7 machine so the 32 bit XP machine could print to it. All works fine now. Thanks for your help and a a big thanks for listening to my whining!

If you're printing from an XP machine to a win 7 machine via a wireless network, you will have nothing but problems. It works, then it doesn't, then I reset it all and it works, then it doesn't. On and on and so on... The 2 OS just don't like each other. Oh sure, you'll get it to work if you follow all the suggestions, but not for very long. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever why it works, then it doesn't, but that's exactly what occurs. It's a royal pain in the ...

I have a Canon LBP3300 connected to my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit computer and i have another computer, a Windows Vista 32bit that i want to share with. I followed the instructions and i have added the printers on the Windows Vista computer, however when i try and print a test page, i get an error and it says:

Cannot communicate with server
The following may have occured
-server is down
-The firewall settings of the client does not allow communications with the server

However, even after i turned off the firewall for both computers i still get the error.

Please help!! it would be greatly appreciated

works fine till reboot

The XP machine has no problem printing to the printer on the Windows 7 machine UNTIL THE XP MACHINE GETS REBOOTED. Once rebooted the XP machine will not print to the printer on the Win7 machine. Then I delete the printer from the XP machine, reinstall it, and it works fine. I thought perhaps on reboot it was loading a different driver but it doesn't appear to be doing that.
So the million dollar question is... Why does the XP machine print fine to the printer on the Win7 machine until the XP machine gets rebooted??? Any ideas?

I assume it's something loading up in the registry upon restart but I have no idea what it would be nor how to analyze that.

I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.


If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

I can only access the XP machine via its network IP address; using its name returns a "Not found" error. However, this fact did not make the printer addition impossible using a revised Jimbo method, as described below:

At 5), my computer said the port already existed. I made the following changes to the procedure:

4) Use an existing port: (Choose the port from the dropdown list, should be \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER or, in my case, \\XPIPADDRESS\SHAREDPRINTER)

5) Choose the printer manufacturer and the printer model/driver from the list. The name should be the same as the names in Google search results for your specific printer name and model number (for example, a Samsung ML-2571N shows up as "Samsung ML-2570 Series"). If there are multiple drivers listed for the same printer, choose the one that worked for other Windows 7 machines or for your XP machine (i.e. PCL6 vs. PS6, I chose the PCL6 driver).

** If the correct driver does not appear on the list, click "Windows Update", or use the driver that is most similar to the driver you need.

6) Continue to follow the onscreen prompts. When prompted, designate the printer as a shared printer; keep the name at default and change the location to "\\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER" (without the "s).

The above steps successfully installed the printer on my Windows 7 machine. Have not yet rebooted my Windows 7 or my Windows XP to test the consistency of the configuration, which I recommend you.

as I mentioned before...

My xp machine can print to the printer on the win 7 machine when I set it up correctly as posted here, works great. When I reboot the xp machine, it loses the win 7 printer every time. I can then "add a printer" and go through the process again. It will work till I reboot the xp machine again, then it loses the printer on the win 7 machine. Looks like that leaves me 3 choices:
1) email what needs to be printed to the win7 machine (that's what my daughter does now which means I have to print everything for her).
2) NEVER reboot the xp machine.
3) toss out the xp machine and buy another win7 machine.
All these choices suck.
I assume when it reboots, something in the registry is loading the old config or old driver or something along these lines.
