"You may be a victim of online counterfeiting"

So, I'm getting the warning that says "Warning: You may be a victim of online counterfeiting". The link in the warning takes me to a Microsoft.com page that determines whether my version is valid or not. It is saying it's not.

The problem is, it should be. I had the original Windows from when I purchased my laptop from Best Buy 3 years ago. About 1 month ago, I had to reinstall windows but I used the built in system-recovery programs. I didn't use a CD or anything. How a system-recovery version of Windows, provided by my original Windows, be counterfeit? :huh:

So far as I know there is NO SUCH official error message as is in your thread title.


Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Looks like you reinstalled using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key, but retail media - which can never work.


You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.


You may need to activate by phone.
