Solved You Tube Display Problem?

There are two large black boxes either side of the You Tube display using IE9. I am sure these weren't there the last time I went to You Tube most likely about a month ago. You Tube seems to display correctly in Firefox with links appearing to the right of the display. I have recently re-installed Flashplayer which is now up to date and I think I updated Java recently. I also downloaded up to date graphics card drivers to see if that was the problem but it isn't. Everything else in You Tube seems to be working normally. Any thoughts please?

That is to do with aspect ratios. The YouTube player utilises the 16:9 format, meaning that 16:9 videos will fill the screen area. The video you mention is recorded in 4:3 format, and is displayed with black bands down either side. In a similar way, a 4:3 aspect screen will correctly display 4:3 videos, but for 16:9 videos will display them with the black bars above and below, known as letterbox mode.

Thanks Dwarf. I understand about the asect ratio what I mean is those big square boxes to the left and right of the display that go right to the edge of the screen. I am sure they never used to be there.

No, if you look at my attachment there are large black boxes each side of the display. You have links to the right and a blank white area to the left which is how You Tube used to display for me

That is the sort of display you should get if the video is "expanded".

Hardly a problem The video displays properly the dark grey boxes are an improvement over white to my eyes, you can get extensions in Opera & Firefox , I use the Turn off the lights ext in Opera

Kado 897. That is how it all looks in Firefox. I believe that is how it should display in IE9 and I am sure that a few weeks ago that is how it used to look. In Normal you have the links along side the video I have two large black/grey boxes. I am wondering what has happened.

Stve, I understand what you say but I think something has gone wrong somewhere.

Yes. You are right. IE9 works as it should for me too. Not sure what your problem is but these things are generally caused by add-ons. You might try disabling them except flash of course and if that is ok put them back one at a time.

Then I'm about out of ideas unless you have a system restore point from before the problem started. You might also try sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt.

Displaying correctly for me in IE9, as I mentioned previously. Clicking on the / does indeed toggle the display as Keith says. The question is this: Why does your snip in the first post show when with the layout it is displaying it should be ?

I agree that it is probably an addon or activex issue that is causing this issue, probably one that has, for some reason, become corrupt.

Yes that the question and the video area appears too small for it to be in the expanded state. As I said above I've just about run out of ideas.

The initial snip shows the video in shrink mode not expanded so I think that is correct.

I have just done a System Restore back to the 1st June. (That was a barrel of laughs!) It hasn't made any difference except I have now lost Firefox but will download again. I may not have gone back far enough of course.

I will try a scannow.

Thanks for all your input, it is appreciated. It must be an IE problem as all seems to be well in Firefox.

I guess you are right but IE is fairly tightly integrated into Windows. One other thing that might be worth trying is clearing out any IE cookies and caches.

Scannow didn't produce anything and I have just cleared out all of Browsing History so I don't know what to think about this.

Try downloading and installing a fresh copy of IE9, in case your current copy is corrupted.

It won't let me do that because I have IE9 loaded. Does that mean I need to revert to IE8 first?

Did you click Save or Run? You should click Save to save a copy on your computer (preferably your desktop). Next, close the current version of IE9 and uninstall it with reference to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/112121-internet-explorer-9-uninstall.html and restart your computer. Now click on the downloaded file and IE9 should reinstall.
