Zone Alarm Installation in Windows 7

I upgraded my daughters computer from Vista to Windows 7. When installing the upgrade it said that Zone Alarm wasn't compatible or wouldn't work correctly. I tried to still upgrade but the installation wouldn't continue while Zone Alarm was installed. I uninstalled it and then tried to re-install with one that was suppose to be Windows 7 Compatible but when I attempted to do so I got the following message:
Could not initialize installation. Could not exract Wise0132.dll to C:\Users\Caroline\AppData\Local\Temp\GLC9EF.tmp'. CRC does not match.

Is there anyway around this error to get Zone Alarm to load or is there something with the Dll file being corrupt and if so how to resolve ?

Having a 3rd party firewall like Zone Alarm isn't at all necessary in Windows 7, which has an excellent firewall and standing Windows Defender protection.

Add a lightweight free AV like Avast and there is nearly no resource hit at all, yet nothing will get in as long as they are kept on and working together, perfectly.

I was about to post a similar answer! I will never understand why folks want to installed multiple firewalls, when one is built into the operating system already. I would suggest Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus/antispyware. Upon installation, it will disable Windows Defender since the functions are duplicated.

I honestly see this as the beginning of the end for Norton, McAfee, Avast, ZoneAlarm and all the other bloated antivirus software being charged for today, and I hope I'm right!

There's many reasons a user would want to use ZoneAlarm instead of Windows Firewall. The above link is excellent for 7. It's not resource heavy at all. ~ 25 MB of RAM usage and no slowdowns when accessing disks, with Kaspersky antivirus built in.

I like free, unless it is bunk. In this case, free has always seemed a better solution.

Paid firewalls and AV's have in the past seemed to be bloaty in direct relation to their cost.

Hi, any suggestions why I'm getting frequent Blue-screens when I'm installing Zone Alarm Pro on my PC, running windows 7 , and McAfee.
Ive had 6 screens of death, then it worked, then upgraded to latest version of Zone Alarm, and after a couple more blue screens, UI never initiated, internet was blocked and I had the safest machine on earth.
Is it ZA and Mcafee?

After years of zone alarm, I agree with the chap who gave 18 reasons why he likes ZA. So do (did) I, but it doesnt seem to work on my 64 bit machine

You would/might get more response if you started your own thread. I was a long time ZAP user until it became bloated. As someone who analyzes BSOD's I have seen that ZA can cause them.

There are alternatives. win firewall and MSE seem to be the current favorites

FYI, i ran som tests on ZA-Pro a few days ago, it does NOT block OUTGOING connections as a good firewall should,
it only got 270/340 with Comodo´s Leak-Test (CLT).

you don´t want ZA....

get a REALLY good firewall instead, i recommend Online Armor, it got 340/340 with CLT.
there is both a paid & a FREE version: Online Armor Premium Firewall

update: just saw a typo, corrected testresult above: 270/340 for ZA.
i also tested another firewall (from a well-known BIG name) yesterday, that firewall got 170/340.
going to post my testresults for both FW´s tomorrow, (in another thread)....

There are so many firewalls and antivirus suites, and some say a and b are rubbish and c and d are great.
Others rubbish a,b,c and fall over laughing at d.
With so many "experts" it's impossible to know who's right and who's wrong. AND why.
Everyone seems to say that McAfee slows everything down and uses too many resouces, so I'll try the windowssecurity essentials, But what confidence can you have in a company that needs to fix its security every 4th tuesday, the critical ones, and lots of other jokes like windows vista and windows ME.
It's going to be a leap of faith.

You raised an interesting question that deserves consideration.

Various versions of Windows are by far the most widespread OS's on the planet. The OS has to be able to run a huge variety of hardware and software on a multitude of different computer setups. That is a tall order for those writing the software code.

Add to that the fact that hackers are getting better and using more sophisticated hacking tools. Are hackers who are in it for financial gain going to worry about trying to hack Apple? They are not going to waste their time. Their efforts are toward Microsoft OS's because of the shear numbers.

I think it is highly commendable the MS stays on top of security problems. Even other OS's have to have security updates and they are not nearly as widespread in use as MS OS's. Remember, antivirus programs are updated by their companies almost daily and, except for MSE, they are not MS products.

Keep ZAP and ditch McAfee.

Ditch both, use windows firewall and windows Security essentials.

:roflmao:It was very painful! I learned by the school of hard knocks. If a mistake can be made, I have made it!

I recommend either MSE or Avast for an antivirus. Avast works well with Win 7. I recommend Malwarebytes as an on demand scanner. I update and run Malwarebytes once a week. I have used both Online Armor and Comodo successfully on my Win 7 system - not at the same time, obviously. I have also used Windows Firewall.

Please tell your son that I thank him for his service to his nation. I know you are worried about him. My oldest son just retired from the Army after 20 years and three combat tours and my stepson got back from Iraq in April. So I understand the concern. I lost my youngest son during a Bosnia rotation, thus the flag.
