Windows 7 all of a sudden saying it's not genuine.

Hey all.

Well, the above pretty much sums up my problem. Booted into Windows like any normal day and I was greeted with the following message on a black screen "This copy of Windows 7 is not genuine".

I had an option to either go online and resolve it or an ask me later tab. I obviously clicked the former and it took me to Microsoft's validation page where it said "Validating Windows this should only take a few minutes".

The result? A page where it advises which version of Windows is best for me and buy options. What?!

I know my copy is genuine and it hasn't done this before so this is new for me. I have run a virus scan and malware scan so I don't think it's virus/malware at play. Not edited the registry in any way and have done a few restarts to see if was just a glitch or the system playing silly buggers. Nope, still says it on every reboot.

I now have this in the bottom right hand corner of my desktop: "Windows 7 build 7601 this copy of Windows is not genuine".

I'm pretty stumped. Can I not just go to somewhere and put in the product key that is attached to my tower and re validate it?

I have included the MGDiag tool report. Hope you can help me out. Cheers.

FliGi7. It was purchased via Amazon.co.uk on 27/02/12. Now, it was left for a while before install but since using it for 6 months I've had it trouble free. It's only done this to me this week. That's why I'm so confused.

It's the Home Premium Upgrade Edition but I did a fresh install on a seperate hard drive.

Maguscreed. What's pone? Is this the solution? Could you care to explain further please?

He means phone option, e.g. calling in to Microsoft to have them activate it for you. That is what I would try at this point if you know it's a valid key and you've properly entered it upon install.

The problem here is possibly a corrupted Licensing Store - until it's fixed not activation can be successful..
Recreate the Licensing Store
1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
9) Type: slui.exe
10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

You may have to use telephone activation.

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate not genuine

I have the same problem as sparky05084, I have a Toshiba laptop and upgraded windows home premium to ultimate. Suddenly, I got the message "this copy of windows is not genuine". I've tried everything.
Something, quite interesting is that this happened exactly 6 months after the activation of windows 7 ultimate.

I can format the laptop to the OEM original state, but I wanna know, why this copy of windows was flagged as not genuine, since I bought it just after my laptop.

This is the summary of the MGADiag Tool.

Thanks in advance.

@Pabloadr

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Thanks @NoelDP.

I was almost sure it was an MSDN key, but I didn't know how to check it; indeed, I have two of those in use.

I already reverted my system to the OEM state, (and spent all afternoon uninstalling bloatware).

Thanks again for the info.

I see I gave you the same answer in the MS WGA forums as well :)

Thank you for the 4-year old help

NoelDP
Thank you for the instruction how to fix the sudden, spontaneous action by my 7-yr old Lenovo laptop to think it was running a non-authentic version of Win 7. I followed the script you provided here and it worked just as you said. It is unknown to me why my laptop became confused this way...cosmic rays, perhaps? At any rate, all's well that ends well, thanks principally to you.
Lex
