Sorry - I missed you in the frenzy! ;(

Please open an elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command,

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Good - that's what we expected...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG DELETE HKLM\COMPONENTS /V PendingRequired

then reboot, and try Windows Update again.

That worked for me too. Shame on M$. Tried two different fix-its to no avail. Their troubleshooter/fix-its doesn't even recognize this error code. M$ brain-death as usual.

Most of the time, this type of error is caused by pre-existing problems with the install, rather than being the fault of an update.

However, in this case, it does seems that some update was particularly fragile.
Hopefully, MS will be producing either a Fixit, or at least a Wiki article on the proper fix.

Glad it helped! - good luck.

Got the same problem with an HP Probook 650 and Office 2010 (which gave the error message)

The (last) post of NoelDP did the trick in getting Office to install. Now apply the trick to the other two HP's

I think my root cause was dodgy HP drivers (which are getting more and more common with HP )

Thank you NoelDP! I've had this error message since last July and got the same error code when I updated iTunes but, thanks to you and your sound advice, it's now fixed and 65 Windows updates have been successfully installed (and I've got a working iTunes back)
Just as well this forum exists as MS just seem to take the money and run....
