Solved Phone Activation of Windows 7 & 2008 R2

Recently I imaged a broken sever with 2008 R2 on it to a virtual machine. After I got everything working I went to activate however it wouldn't activate over the internet stating that there are too many activations. You click on phone support and it doesn't load a help file or offer phone activation. I had to follow this guide to get the option for phone activation.

1. Click on Start Menu.
2. Type slui.exe 4 into Start Search, and then press Enter.

Then you get the activation phone number, the installation ID, and boxes to enter in the activation code. It worked and I was able to activate Windows.

dont forget validation is a 2 part process.
Activation and Registration

It can be Activated, BUT the system will not update because its not Registered, thats what SLUI4 is about, (and KB971033)


run the Mgdiag tool, check the lower part under, Windows Activation Technologies.

I don't know what you are referring to. I don't think I've ever had to register Windows. Also what am I checking for with Mgdiag?

I am not out of date on updates except that I haven't installed rollups since 2017 (and I'm not going to). This isn't a fresh install but a clone of a system I broke in February. It's stable because I got help from the VMWare forum on the cloning process and it isn't an OEM key.
