    Problems Booting and Installing Windows

So I'm attempting to help fix my friends computer, its a Gateway NV series running windows 7, not 100% sure what the model number is.
The problem is when I try to boot the computer, I get a window saying:
    "Start Up Repair
Windows cannot repair this computer automatically
If you have recenly attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you contiunue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Click finish to exit and shut down your computer."
There's two options above the FINISH and CANCEL buttons: "View diagnostic and repiar details" which opens a window saying:
"Startup repair diagnosis and repair log
Last successful boot time: some date, number of repair attempts: 23
    Session Details - System Disk = \Device\Harddisk0
    Windows directory = C:\Windows
    Autochk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1"
and the other option is "view advance options for system recovery and support", but none of the options here do too much.

I was given a windows 7 upgrade disc and a windows 7 drivers and software disc. I tried booting for the upgrade disc but that didn't work. So I downloaded a version of windows 7 and burnt it to a dvd and tried to boot from that, but that didnt work either. So I tried to boot to ubuntu from the cd to backup all his files, and that worked.
I need a way to get windows 7 back on this computer... please help!

So you/your friend dont have the windows 7 installer disk or haven't created a repair disk ?

At that situation you may download Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files .

Download the appropriate disk image that you need in this situation, burn it in a disk , and boot it up .... then follow these tutorials .

    Startup Repair

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

    These tutorials should work .

Folks, just a heads up, in case you missed it. Win7 system repair disk iso's have not been available from Neosmart for some time now. That page now says (under Download Links):

Downloads have suspended pending copyright clarification.

       Information
We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

If you have not made your Startup Repair

Do you have a mate with Windows 7 & CD/DVD RW Drive, how could burn one off.

Download Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper, burn to CD or write to flash stick, boot to update and scan system for infection. If you can boot into Safe Mode run Malwarebytes.

If you have the Gateway Win7 Installation DVD then it should boot, as should the WIn7 installation DVD you burned, Repair CD or MS Sweeper CD.

Make sure you are setting BIOS to boot DVD drive first, before HD: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

Or try tapping the Gateway F10 key at boot to trigger the BIOS Boot Menu, select CD/DVD drive to boot.

Now are you getting the prompt to "Press any key to boot DVD?" If so then the DVD should boot or you need to confirm your IS0 and burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed. If not, you are not triggering the DVD drive correctly - recheck your settings, try another DVD drive, try writing installer to flash stick.

To write to bootable flash stick, install Ultra ISO trial version: On File tab select Open DVD or ISO, on Bootable Tab select Write Disk Image, FOrmat, Write. Boot under USB, Removable, or HD's.

Once booted, enter Repair console to try running Startup Repair repeatedly relying on the disk's files and not possibly damaged System files to do the repairs.

Next try running from DVD/Repair CD Command Line SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot until System files are repaired.

You can copy out files using DVD or Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Then run Gateway factory recovery from partition at boot or disks which you have or order: Gateway Support - Full Factory Recovery

Or boot the DVD to clean reinstall following these steps to get a perfect reinstall of factory OEM: Reinstalling Windows 7. You can force the DVD to autostart by wiping the HD first using Partition Wizard bootable CD which will also autostart on its own. Partition Wizard
