I have posted this query on the Windows 8 Forum... As yet unanswered. As the Thread Title says: but only in Windows 8/8.1. I have no problem with Windows 7. I have searched the net to no avail only people asking the same question. This is not a great problem only annoying when going from one PC to another.

Any/all help appreciated.

So are you talking about the website (www.outlook.com), or the actual program that you download?

Nope. Windows Live Mail program. I only use the 'Mail' part of WLM, for my emails. This does not happen all the time. but occurs in 8/8.1. Its the Icon to the far right, with my proper name on it where you can 'Sign in' and 'Sign out' I have searched Microsoft, and apparently this is quite common. The string I searched for is as my post heading. There does not seem to be an answer, unless I am phrasing it wrong. I have even ticked the "Remember my Password" box.

Thanks for the early reply.

Hi snap,

I'm going to assume that you're on Windows Essentials Mail (WEmail) 2012. I'm probably the only person to use the term WEMail but it helps distinguish between Live this, Live that... I also use OLcom to distinguish between Outlook and Outlook.com.

Now that I've explained my eccentricities, let me ask a few other questions.

Do you have an OLcom account and do you use it for eMail?

If I recall, this is an issue where WEMail is trying to sync with OLcom. More precisely an underlying component of Windows Essenitals. It's changed over the past few years 2009, 2011, 2012 versions and bugs got carried over or manifested themselves in new ways, even new bugs. But in my opinion 2012 is the most stable.

I'll see what I can find, maybe something I read in a search will spark life into that brain cell.

This is going to be difficult. I don't run Win8 and you said that this is not an issue on Win7.

Thanks Slartybart for getting back. I think/sure the answer is no to OLcom? What is it? I downloaded WE, and only use the email part of it. Not a lover of Outlook, and do not have Office. 'Instance' This morning.07:15 28/01/2014, checked my emails, and low and behold had to sign in to my Microsoft account to retrieve emails. The program I originally downloaded is 'WLsetup', runs perfect in Windows 7, but not Win 8/8.1. If you think it might be OLcom, I have searched for it, what is the link/web address? I will try anything. Another instance. When my wife uses the laptop, to check her emails, sometimes has the same problem. Thought it was me only :D Hope to hear from you soon. As I said searching through the web has not helped. Could be 8/8.1 that causes this???

Outlook.com (OLcom) - I thought i covered that base...guess not. I hope I cleared it up now though.

Web references to: Microsoft Account... Live.com....Outlook.com - they all mean the same thing to me.
I'm sorry that I confused you, you're not the first one I've confused though.

Win8 causing it? I don't think so, other people have reported it on Win7. It's an initial thing if I recall.. changing an option resolves it. In the back of my mind, it's "stop signing in" - just took a quick look at my WEMail and I don't see that - it might have been on version 2011.

Is the sign in icon on the Home ribbon active? Don't click it, just mouse over it.

OLcom and WEMail - see post # 4 :)

I'm hitting the sack, but will read your post tomorrow.

Well, I made it the bedroom and a brain cell ignited.

How did you configure the accounts on Win8 WEMail? I've helped people with other WEMail issues and I suggest as a test to create a new Mail account, but not let WEMail automatically configure it.

Tick manually configure and fill in the fields per your ISP. You can turn off send/recv (include this account... on the first account screen) the suspect account and configure the new account with the same eMail id, password, server, etc. The good news is that you have a working exmple - just use the same values and test to see if a manually configured Mail account does not make you log on.

Ok, got that down on paper, off to bed.

Ahh ha? Stupid me :( should have realised, (got to get used to these abbreviations) the "Stop signing in" is through file, options, mail, connection. I tried that, yes it stops the signing in but also unless I download/import "Contacts, Calendar, feeds etc", I do not have any. Have a good Kip/sleep.

The way I setup our accounts was manually, tried the automatic, way back, doesn't work that well. What I will do is uninstall the 2 email accounts, and configure them both again. Will let you know how that works. Thank you for your time. You and newblueboy are the only guys to respond to this minor niggle. Very much appreciated, and perhaps between us, (with you and newblueboy's expertise) who knows? we could find an answer.

Hi guys,

I think I have (sussed)/sorted out my little problem. After looking at a post on this forum Windows Live Mail update and my contacts list - Microsoft Community and looking down the replies, I do not have to keep signing into WLM :D I hope! If the problem rears its head again I will let you know. I think the reason for signing into WLM is to see all "Contacts, Feeds, Calendar etc. By importing "Contacts" all seems to be working, 'Der', call me daft for something so simple.

If this works I will get back and mark this post as "Solved".

Yes. All running OK :D

You're not stupid, I'm confusing - not on purpose, but because the way MS (err Microsoft) named these things. I tried to untangle the string and it didn't help. The abbreviations I use are not common, so don't get used to them, besides that there's this:
was Windows Live Mail (WLM)...........is Windows Essentials Mail (WEM)
was Windows Live SkyDrive (WES).... is/will be Windows Essentials OneDrive (WEO)
was Hotmail (Hotmail)......................is Outlook.com (OLcom)
was Livemail (Live?)........................is Outlook.com (OLcom)

You can't win snap.

Ok, that's what I tried to get to when my OLcom abbreviation got in the way. I asked in post# 4
Do you have an OLcom account and do you use it for eMail?

I should have asked
"Do you have an Outlook.com (OLcom) account and do you use it for eMail?"

Might have helped, but your reference is to a Microsoft Account. so we were talking, we were saying the same thing, but.....

It's good to know that your sussed it out (I understood sussed :) )

So it sounds as though Windows Essentials Mail (WEMail) depends heavily on the Outlook.com (OLcom) contacts and will look there to resolve any addresses that are not stored locally. This requires a user to login to their Outlook.com (OLcom) account.

The workaround is to export your contacts on Outlook.com (OLcom) and import them to Windows Essentials Mail (WEMail).

I suppose it's somewhat of a protection mechanism - why send/recv if it can't resolve addresses. So it forces you to logon.

I don't like that one bit! But I don't own the company and I'm not on the development team.

Thanks for the great feedback, I'll try to remember all of this if another member has a similar issue.

One more question.
Are your accounts IMAP, POP3, or HTML (formerly Hotmail protocol)
I suspect IMAP (Internet message access protocol)

Had you not come up with a workaround, I would have suggested using a POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)account. It might have taken a few rounds, but I would have suggested it.

I had a bit of fun typing all of the (acronym definitions, abbreviations). It makes my long post that much longer. :p

Hey snap,

How does the workaround compare on Win7 and Win8?
Are the contacts in the Win7 WEMail?
Is the protocol the same?

Are the Mail Servers the same?

From an application standpoint, the OS shouldn't make a difference.

Thanks again,

Bill

Have not tried the workaround in Windows 7. Every time WLM is fired up no problems and it stays logged in from the last time I used it. Agree with it shouldn't make a difference, but it has me foxed why this should happen. The mail servers are the same, all contacts and feeds etc are there all the time. I have got rid of Feeds, I do not use them and News. I remember when I went over to Win 7 64Bit from 32. I had to re-format drives and started afresh, then Marysia, my wife asked Where are all the contacts?" Download and configured the csv file, into Windows 7 and since loading and configuring WLM as I said once logged in no probs.

No Outlook, pop3 usual name and password protected. I must admit I like some of abbreviations going around. ie, SMF, FUBAR, NOYN, STFU and on and on and on.

See what I mean, you just can't win!

No Outlook, pop3 usual name and password protected....

No Outlook or
No Outlook.com ?

Maybe a different tact? What is the name of your Mail Server?
My Outlook.com Mail account in WEMail:
Incoming: pop3.live.com
Outgoing: smtp.live.com

You just can't win!

Thank you for posting what you found, it will come in handy.

Bill

My Incoming mail server is a [pop3] server
Incoming: pop3 mail.plus.net
Outgoing: smtp relay.plus.net

No Outlook and no Outlook.com
This one of the reasons I configured manually.

ps, did you work out NOYN?

No..Yes..No?
Not on your Nanny?
No one you no?

If it's similar to FUBAR or STFU, you probably shouldn't post the answer here, I can most likely giggle it.

So, the logon issue is just related to a populated contact list.
0 contacts - WEMail tries to log on somewhere
1+ Contacts- WEMail does NOT try to log on somewhere

manually configured
POP3
not OLcom
Win8

That's different than what I thought before. hmmmmm
Still, I can suggest that at least one contact be in WEMail.

Thanks again snap

Bill
