BSOD connected with Windows Backup

To begin, I was attempting to "fix" Windows Back-up because it wasn't working. System Maintenance sent me to the Back-up setting screen, and while there, I experienced a BSOD.


I have since run an Avast Boot scan, and it found five files with errors. Two were data errors in Windows Prefetch files, and one was a corrupt .cab in WAIK.exe. If you would like to see the Avast report, I can get it.


I figured that I really didn't need Windows Back-up, if I used Macrium Reflect 7. I just tried to run a back-up on my C: disk with Macrium, and it aborted twice, the last time after 8%. I know that this Reflect works, because I backed up my external HDD last night.


I have been contemplating using the Windows install disk and doing a repair through it. It's been a while since I've done that, but I'm pretty sure that it is possible to do a non-destructive system reinstall. The only reason I haven't done it is that it will really screw up my dual boot. On the other hand, I do have Boot Repair Disk which will, IIRC, repair all the MBRs and reinstall Grub, so it's maybe not as major as I seem to believe it is.

At any rate, I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can give me.

sfc says there was 100% verification after its scan.


I've run chkdsk several times recently. The last time was yesterday, and a boot time scan came back clear. However, I've scheduled another boot time scan with the /r switch. I'll let you know the results.


HDD Sentinel is showing a dramatic recent drop in my hard drive's health. It's gone from 1 weak sector to eight in about two days. I could replace the SATA cable to see if that helps. I had to replace the SATA cable on my Linux Mint HD a couple of weeks ago.

Right click on the command prompt icon, click Run As Administrator -- report back if that does not work.

As HD sentinel is showing a dramatic recent drop in your hard drive's health.
And from what i previously posted i suspect its on its way out

Time to back-up all your important data.

SSD's are pretty cheap nowadays- spinners even cheaper, off to the shops
Nothing else showed as a problem in your logs, so the rest of your hardware seems fine
Once you got it a >>clean install<< will mitigate (remove) the prefetch problems

The chkdsk /r has finished. It found bad clusters in several places, and fixed them, including the prefetch ones.



Trying to back up started this whole thing, but I will see if Macrium can work now. (edit) I've just run a back-up on the C drive and it worked. I replaced the SATA cable to the HD, and it seems to have made a huge difference in computer operation. It's much faster and seems more capable. I don't know if the old one was unseated somewhere or bad, but the new one has clips so it can't unseat.

I have almost no data on this disk; I save all data to an external HD, so when a HD replacement is needed--and in 10 years I've had several hard drive replacements--a new HD only means installing the OS and the programs. If Macrium will let me, should I clone this disk?

Come to think of it, if I have to replace the HD with the OS, should I just go ahead and install 7, get the 10 update and install it to a clean HD?

I'm not sure that this motherboard from 2009 can handle an SSD. So I'll probably go with an Enterprise level WD HDD.

Im running a 500gb SSD on a 2009 motherboard, so yours shouldnt be a problem.

As for your Macrium back-up -- Image it DONT clone,
Believe theres an option for it to skip bad sectors.

When you ran chkdsk before must have been in read mode only, the R(epair) switch did its job

As youve replaced the Sata cable and your comp is working better, it might be that the cable was kinked and caused the interupts/bad blocks
Run the HD sentinal tool again, you could be pleasently surprised

As youv'e now replaced 2 Sata cables , if you bought them together faulty batch?
