Hello All,

I hope that I can get some help with this Windows 7 problem.

My Computer has stopped working and is showing a Bluescreen error message which states that `a problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer`.

My Computer runs Windows 7 Home Premium and I have not downloaded anything that I am aware of for months so this should not have been caused by any software / new programs.

There was very little technical detail showing on the Bluescreen error message except for this on the first time that it appeared - this is typed exactly as it appeared:

%SystemRoot%System32\wbem\repository

Destination: WmStaging

I then turned off the computer and turned it on again pressing F8 to enter the start up menu and selected `Repair my Computer`.

Because I thought that I could just restore my Computer to another time I carried out the System Restore process and when the computer restarted I received a message that this had been done / saw evidence of some changes to the programs on the computer I thought that this had removed the problem but the estore to Bluescreen shutdown / error appeared again after a few minutes.

The Bluescreen error message technical details are now different to the previous details - it is showing:

STOP: 0x000000B8 [0x866E6D48, 0x865BCD48, 0xD185FFD0, 0x00000000]

There is a word before STOP but it is off screen / not visible.

I am guessing that it must be the same `Fault` because there was no Bluescreen fault on the computer at the time of the restored to date - I am assuming that because the computer is now different to before the `restore to a different time` process that is why the previous error message technical detail is different ?

I hope that I have not made rectifying the original problem impossible by doing the `Restore to a previous time` process ?

Something that is really worrying me is that when I started up my Computer in the `Safe Mode` for the first time to try restoring it to a previous time the Bluescreen error display occurred within a couple of minutes I did not have enough time to select a previous date - I then had to turn off the Computer manually and restart it again in Safe Mode and very quickly do the restore to a previous time process.

I mention this because it occurs to me that I would not have time to carry out any lengthy process to solve the problem on my Computer before the Windows Bluescreen error appears.

The other text on the Bluescreen error message is just stating to disable or remove any new hardware or software but as I mentioned there is nothing new that had been installed for a long time.

I know that this statement may frustrate some readers and prevent some people from trying to help me but I must state that I have very little knowledge of `Computing` having started using one very late in life to use a Computer just for online shopping, news and emails but I feel that if someone could give me `Idiot Proof` instructions I might be able to follow them.

I tried taking a photo of the Bluescreen error message but even with it displayed large on my TV I could not get a clear enough photo for anyone to be able to read it if I could have uploaded it here.

I did try a Google search on the first error message technical detail above [%SystemRoot%System32\wbem\repository]
but that brought up information and advice that seemed so complicated that I simply could not even contemplate understanding whether any of it was relevant to my Bluescreen shutdown problem.

If I cannot get my Computer working again it will have a massive effect on my life - I have a severe / disabling back problem and I have been `Shielding` from the Corona Virus for over 260 days - I have to order my Food & Grocery shopping online as I cannot go out and I don`t have anyone who could do my shopping for me - so if I cannot use my Computer I would be in real trouble regarding not getting Food.

Also my main method of keeping in touch with distant family members and a couple of friends is by Email.

I do not have a Smart phone and I am retired so I will never be able to afford to buy a new Computer - I have borrowed a friend`s laptop to write and submit this question / message but I will only be able to keep it for a few days to hopefully view any replies to this and try to solve my computer problem.

I would really appreciate any information on what those error messages relate to and any help in rectifying the situation - as I mentioned could you please give `Step by Step` instructions Please.

My regards,

Chris

P.S: I have the original Windows Repair discs that I made both when installing Windows Vista when my Computer was bought and also after I used the Windows 7 upgrade disc - would using any of those or both of them get rid of the Windows Bluescreen errors ?

I have explained this because I do not have a Windows 7 Home Premium installation disc - my Computer had Vista installed when I bought it but that was so close to the Windows 7 release that I was entitled to buy the Windows 7 upgrade disc for just the delivery charges and I used it to upgrade to Windows 7.

Hi Chrisx,

Can you get in safe mode with network? It's the same procedure you used to get in safe mode, but just a slightly different option.

Hello axeO,

Thanks for replying to me.

I do see the Safe Mode with networking start up option when I start up my Computer.

Before I came to my thread / saw your message I was directed to a message from a Moderator which gave instructions on how to carry out a procedure which produced a file which is obviously related to a Bluescreen shutdown / Windows malfunction but as I described in my original message when my Computer is turned on [manually] selecting Safe Mode I only get 3 or 4 minutes before the Bluescreen shudown so I would not have enough time to carry out the procedure to create the file ?

Do You recognise the Bluescreen shutdown error message technical detail that was displayed on the first shutdown as a known problem ?:

%SystemRoot%System32\wbem\repository

Destination: WmStaging

Thank You very much for replying I really appreciate your help.

Regards, Chris

Message to the Moderators: I apologise for posting my message in the wrong section of the Forum - I know so little about Computing that only after reading your message did I realise that BSOD meant Blue Screen of Death.

I do not recognize those details; I have never seen them before to be honest. A quick search does not give many results either unfortunately.

This stop code you mentioned, 0xB8, is one that's not often occurring in general. At first sight, a 0xB8 sounds like a software problem, but if you get problems in safe mode as well then it is highly likely that there's an underlying hardware problem.

Rarely, once or twice that I have seen in hundreds/thousands of situations, is something like this because of a severely corrupted Windows installation.

Am I correct when I say that you used the recovery options to attempt booting in safe mode? If not, how exactly did you configure Windows to boot in safe mode?

Depending on how you configured Windows to go in safe mode, there may be a few things we could try to get more information out of the crashes and hopefully resolve them.

Hello again axeO,

Thanks for your reply.

When I used to turn on my Computer it used to display a black screen with various `Boot Up` options on it for example `Windows 7` - `Windows in Safe Mode` - `Windows in Safe Mode with Networking` and an Antivirus software removal tool.

Plus something called Macrimflect [spelling ?] which someone advised me to put onto my Computer some time ago when I had a problem in case Windows stopped working - I have never been `Brave enough` to try clicking onto it.

I would select Windows 7 and then the Windows 7 operating system would begin Start up with me having to click onto my onscreen icon to access the Computer / Windows 7.

I did also go to `Recovery options` by quickly clicking onto the F8 keyboard key and tried the `restore to an earlier point in time option - at the first attempt there was no other Restore point showing on my Computer and then the Bluescreen shutdown occurred again so I had to manually turn off my Computer using the power button.

I then remembered that there would be a `Restore point` on an external Hard Drive where I had been Backing Up my Computer to [3 years ago] so I manually turned on my Computer - quickly pressed the F8 key to go to the Recovery options - connected the external Hard Drive - selected `Restore to an earlier point in time and was then able to select a restore to date from the external Hard Drive and the Restore process was carried out and confirmed with an on screen message.

Unfortunately 3 or 4 minutes after that completed the Bluescreen shutdown happened again.

I had naively thought that because my Computer had been returned to the state it would have been in approximately 3 years ago that the Windows Bluescreen shutdown cause would have been removed but obviously that is just because of my lack of knowledge.

You mentioned the 0xB8 stop code - does this mean that the original message technical detail showing:

%SystemRoot%System32\wbem\repository

Destination: WmStaging

has been superseded by the other technical information / codes that showed on the Bluescreen shutdown message when it appeared after I thought that I had carried out the `restore to an earlier point in time` ?

Thanks again for your help - I really appreciate it.

Please excuse the time it takes me to reply - I can only type using one finger so it takes a long time for each message - also I am trying to remember as far as possible exactly what previously happened so I get it correct when letting you know.

Chris

Hello again axeO,

My apology - the program that I mentioned above is Macrium Reflect which a friend advised me to put onto my Computer some time ago because they said it could be useful in future if a major problem occurred.

I am not able to contact them at present to ask for a reminder of what they would tell me to do with it in simple terms - I will look using Google but I will wait for a reply from You before I do anything.

Regards, Chris

Edit: After looking on Google the first thing that I notice is that Macrium Reflect seems to be a program / software that you have to pay for but I definitely did not have to when I downloaded onto my Computer - it was a Free version - if it is something that might have been useful in my circumstances perhaps it would not work now ?

Macrium Reflect is a program that allows you to make a backup of your drive. There is the option to pay for Macrium Reflect, but you do not necessarily need to, normally the free edition works sufficiently for most users.

Crash information rarely supersedes other crash information, it's just a different form of informing you about that something went wrong.

Can you use the external drive to store files on? We'll need it to get data from your pc, which will be done using the command prompt in the recovery options.

In command prompt, enter the following to get the right drive letter. Each line is a new command, thus press an enter after the command.
Code:
diskpart
list volume
Take note of the letter (ltr) of the volume (drive) that matches the size of the drive of Windows. I believe this should be X, or C. Also take note of the letter of the drive you plugged in that is closest to the size of the drive.

I'll denote X as the letter of the drive you took note of, and B as the letter of the drive that's plugged in.

Enter the following command to copy files from X to B.
Code:
copy X:\Windows\Minidump\*.dmp B:\

Now, connect B to the other computer you are using to post here. Select all the files with '.dmp' extension in B:\, right click and click 'send to' and click 'compressed (zipped) folder'. Upload the newly created .zip file in your post please.

Hello axeO,

Thank you very much for your reply,

Please don`t be irritated by this the last thing that I want to do is alienate You.

I don`t think that I would be able to just connect the external Hard Drive and carry out the process that you described - here is why:

From my memory of using the external Hard Drive [3 years ago] when it is connected to my Computer I would have to open up the external Hard Drive Menu display to select something like `Update` which then instigates the external Hard Drive [GoFlex] to start downloading everything from the Computer that has changed / been added since it was last connected / updated.

The starting of the Updating / Downloading took at least 3 or 4 minutes which is about the amount of time that it takes for the Windows Bluescreen shutdown to occur after I start up my Computer on safe Mode.

This process sometimes took hours if the external Hard Drive had not been connected for some time and again from my memory the reason why I have not connected the external Hard drive to the Computer for about 3 years is that I had a `full Back Up` on there and there was not enough space left for another.

Once again probably through my lack of knowledge I did not know whether trying another more up to date `full Back Up` to the external Hard Drive would overwrite the previous one or just back up some stuff into the remaining space or perhaps ruin the existing Back Up and put part of a new Back up into the remaining space.

Because of that I just kept what I thought would be a `Full Back Up` of my Computer albeit from that point in time - I thought that if I had a problem that I could use that to put my Computer back to it`s state in 2017 so at least I would have it working but having lost stuff from that time onwards.

If the Computer was working and the external Hard Drive was connected I am sure that it would be updating for hours.

Also even if the Computer was working correctly I would have no idea how to select the Hard Drive to download / capture only the file that you described being created from a command prompt - I would not know how to select any individual file to be put onto the external Hard drive.

Could You please help me to understand about the Macrium Reflect that is showing on the Computers Start Up Menu:

I downloaded it onto my Computer some time ago - probably at least a couple of years ago but it has never been selected to Boot from - yesterday when I briefly looked on Google it seemed as if the program would have to be Booted from and then run to make a copy of Windows etc.

I had previously thought that when it was downloaded it then copied the Windows operating system ?

Because I have never Booted from it / ran it can I assume that it has NOT made a copy of Windows ?

Does that mean now that I have a Windows Bluescreen shutdown problem that I cannot now Boot up my Computer from Macrium Reflect because it would then make a copy of Windows with the Bluescreen shutdown error cause ?

I know that You are trying to help me and I was amazed to find a BOSD Expert when I joined the Forum - I am really grateful for your help and I understand that usually would be impossible to diagnose the cause of a BOSD without the file / information that you asked for but I am almost certain that what I described above about the external Hard drive would prevent me from being able to do what you asked.

Please don`t give up on me unless it is impossible to proceed - not having a Computer will really affect my life as I described in my original message and as I am retired on a small pension I will never be able to afford to replace it.

Thank You very much for your interest, knowledge and time in trying to help me I really appreciate it.

Regards, Chris

EDIT: I managed turn on my Computer long enough to use the command prompt [accessed by typing command prompt into the Start menu search box] and then I typed in what you suggested:

diskpart
list volume

That displayed a result in the command prompt onscreen box and I had been using my TV as a monitor so that I could take a photo of the details which I hope I will be able to attach to this message - I hope it will be readable as I don`t have a Smart phone or an advanced digital camera.

Hello axeO,

Sorry that the first photo is unreadable after I saw it posted I went to Edit again to remove it but I am guessing that the edit time slot elapsed at just that moment - the second photo is just about readable but has uploaded sideways view.

The main / only used Drives are showing as `Healthy`- the other sections seem to be for removable drives and are showing as `No Media`

Are these the details that You requested and are they any help ?

My Computer went back to Bluescreen shutdown shortly after I managed to do the command prompt process and take the photos - again probably no more than 4 minutes after booting up which I had done by clicking onto `Last known good configuration` which I had not tried before.

Regards, Chris

EDIT: I tried to open a browser on my Computer to come to the Forum and download the .exe file that the BSOD posting instructions has a button / link to but because my Network Adapter takes a while to connect to the internet I could not get to the Forum I could not do that before the Bluescreen shutdown occurred again.

I also wondered if the Windows problem is actually preventing me opening the browser ?

I don` know if downloading it to the Laptop that I am using would enable me to then load the .exe file to a Flash drive which I could connect to the Desktop Computer ?

But even then I would have to be able to get the Flash drive to load the file onto my Desktop - I don`t really know how to do that or if 3 or 4 minutes would be long enough to do that and whether the command prompt action that it instigates would have long enough to run ?

Thanks again axeO for your help.

Chris

Hello again.

I managed to get the Dump file .exe downloaded onto my Desktop Computer - it instigated the command prompt - I watched it complete the process and create a file which I then tried to upload to here but I got a `Invalid File` message when I clicked onto Upload.

I tried again and now on the Computer when clicking onto the zip file it just does not go into the Upload box at all so it cannot be opened to be uploaded.

The File name is:CHRIS-PC-06_12_2020_18206.02.zip - just in case you see anything that looks wrong ?

I will try to carry out the process again but I think that I was very lucky to get it done the first time before the Bluescreen shutdown - I may have to try this again either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

How frustrating.

Chris

EDIT: I THINK that I realised that that file has to have the contents extracted [?] - I tried that and hopefully the .dmp files can now be uploaded ?

Unfortunately NOT - on my Desktop having extracted them I can see all of the .dmp files listed - I click onto them to put them into the Upload box to Open but when I click `Open` to upload to here a message states `File not found` for all of them yet I can see the main file as named above and another box on screen showing the .dmp files and many others.

If the log collector keeps failing, copy and paste the following in a command prompt with administrator privileges.
The following will create a new folder 'CollectedFiles' where most of the files you'd find in the zip file from the log collector will be created in as well. If you could create a zip file from the CollectedFiles folder and upload that, that'd be great.
md "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&wmic /output:"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hotfix.txt" qfe list full /format:table&copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\*.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&dxdiag /t %temp%\dxdiag.txt&copy %temp%\dxdiag.txt "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\dxdiag.txt"&type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts >> "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hosts.txt"&systeminfo > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.tmp"&findstr /v "Owner." "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.tmp" > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.txt"&del "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.tmp"&driverquery /v > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\drivers.txt"&msinfo32 /nfo "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\msinfo32.nfo"&wevtutil qe System /f:text > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\eventlog.txt"&reg export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\uninstall.txt"&reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\installed.txt"

NOTE: both the log collector you ran and the command above can take some time to complete because of msinfo32.nfo file. This file tends to take the most time to be created because of the amount of data. If things take too much time, run the below command instead.
md "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&wmic /output:"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hotfix.txt" qfe list full /format:table&copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\*.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles"&dxdiag /t %temp%\dxdiag.txt&copy %temp%\dxdiag.txt "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\dxdiag.txt"&type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts >> "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\hosts.txt"&systeminfo > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\CollectedFiles\systeminfo.tmp"&findstr /v "Owner." Hello axeO,

Thank You so much for all of the advice that you are giving me.

The first instructions that I copied and pasted into command prompt box did not instigate anything when I clicked Enter.

The second set of instructions stated that a Collected Files file already exists and below that `Access denied` I am guessing re. further scanning ?

I have to ask You how do I ensure that the command prompt is being run `As Administrator` ?

Sorry that I don`t know that - I have just been opening the command prompt by typing that into the Desktop Start search box.

Also - I don`t know how to create a zip file - I have found the CollectedFiles file which has the items stored in a Open Office format - how would I create a zip file from that typed format - the Computer has shutdown again so I cannot see the file names.

Please don`t get irritated with dealing with my lack of Computing knowledge if I cannot get help from You I feel that I will never be able to get my Computer working again.

Thanks again.

Chris

If You can help me with how to do these two processes I will have to continue with this tomorrow because my Desktop Computer is in my Bedroom and my Wife wants to go to bed after our dinner.

When you open a program, right click it and choose 'run as administrator'. You may be prompted by User Account Control to give permission, please do so and click 'Yes'. User Account Control is a system that provides a layer of security against malicious actors running unwanted things.

Administrator privileges gives a program more privileges compared to regular privileges and thus gives access to areas you normally cannot access. Without these privileges the most important files (dump files, files with a '.dmp' extension) necesssary for BSOD troubleshooting cannot be accessed. That is also the only reason why administrator privileges are necessary.

Hello again,

I know about clicking onto `Run as Administrator`regarding opening up other programs, software etc. and I have always done so but when I access command prompt by typing that into the Start button search box and then clicking onto the search result it just opens the command prompt black onscreen display box.

EDIT: Sorry - I have just tried it on the Laptop and right clicking onto the search result `command prompt` brought up a drop down box / menu to select `Run as Administrator` - that did not happen on my Desktop previously.

When I try to carry out the processes again tomorrow how do I create a zip file from the files in the CollectFiles file ?

I am really Sorry to have to ask about this - Please don`t regret trying to help me.

Regards, Chris

You can do it with search results as well, right click the search result and choose 'run as administrator'.

The same way you create a zip file with other files, right click the folder name, choose 'send to' and click 'compressed (zipped) folder'.

Stop apologizing. You have nothing to apologize for.

Hello again axeO,

I tried running the command prompt facility as Administrator and Copying and Pasting the first section of instructions that you gave me but the Computer Bluescreen shutdown occurred before it could finish - I had to wait a few minutes before the Computer fully started up in Safe Mode - longer than previous times so perhaps that used up some time that might have been previously available to command prompt process ?

I will definitely try again later if necessary - meanwhile I thought that I would try to create a zip file from the CollectedFile that was created yesterday - I managed to do that but it still did not upload when I use the Forum upload facility.

EDIT: I hope it has now uploaded see below.

I found out from your description how to create a Zip file from following your instructions - I have never had any reason to do this before so I did not know how to do it before your help.

Unfortunately even when I had the file on my Computer - see screenshot attached - when I tried to upload it to here using the Forum file upload facility it would not go into the upload box displaying on my Computer where I would then click `Open` to upload it.

I moved the CollectedFiles.zip file into my Computer`s Documents folder and then used the Forum File upload facility to browse / go to the folder where I hope the zip file has correctly uploaded ?

I don`t want to click onto it in case I cause any problem with You opening it - I do hope that it contains the information that you asked for ?

I will wait for your reply before trying the command prompt Copy & Paste instructions again in case the zip file does have the information about the Windows Bluescreen shutdown.

Thanks again for helping me with this.

Chris

I checked the zip, there does not appear to be any dump file present.

Please try again to create a zip file and upload it.

& pasted

I checked the zip, there does not appear to be any dump file present.

Please try again to create a zip file and upload it.

Hello axeO,

When I copied & pasted your second command [quicker process ?] into Command prompt and clicked enter a message displayed that stated `there is already a CollectedFiles file on your computer` and nothing else happened.

I am guessing that you might tell me to delete that file or perhaps I can delete the existing contents to empty it for future files to be added but I cannot take a chance and do either without knowing that it would be correct to do so.

Because I don`t know whether the CollectFiles file is a part of Windows 7 I would not delete it or it`s contents without asking You.

If I can get the Computer turned on again and it stays on for a while I am going to try to enter your first command into the Command prompt but as I see that it references the CollectedFiles file again I would probably get the same result from Command prompt unless the existing file can either be deleted or the contents deleted ?

Regarding the zip file that I attached to my previous message - I used the Forum dm log collector to create [or put results into ?] the Collected Files file and then created the zip file that I uploaded to the Forum thread so something obviously went wrong.

Thank You again for persevering with me - I am very grateful for your help - I hope that I will be able to get my Computer started up and remain on for enough time to carry out the Command prompt process and create a file that has the dump file.

Chris

EDIT: I hope that the new zip file has the Dump files and You are able to view them - I did open it on my Computer when it was created and the only files were dmp files and I have opened it on here which took me to a list of the Dump files so hopefully it has the correct information that You need.

I still had to move the zip file from the position that it was put into on my Computer to my Documents Folder before I could use the Forum Upload tool to transfer and attach it to my message here - it would not `Open` to upload to the Forum from it`s original position - I wonder why that was ?

This zip file was actually created by the dm log collector tool this time - that did not happen on my previous attempts to access the Dump files - I had to create a zip file which obviously did not have the Dump files.

Chris
