another BSOD after re-installing w7

hi, i recently opened up a thread here after my system became unstable after trying to OC my pc.

there someone told me to uninstall CCC (Catalyst Control Center) and then remove any traces of it using Disksweeper. tried that, then my sytem wouldn't boot "due to a recent change in hardware and/or software", as POST states.

i've reinstalled w7 after seeking for my cd for ages, and just now i got another BSOD. it happened when i was down for dinner, so i'm thinking it happened when windows shut down my screen. also, sometimes windows (still) doesn't recognise one stick of RAM. i have 3x 2GB sticks, and i'm pretty sure they all work because they are all working at this moment.

- i'm running Windows 7 x64
- i got it retail
- OS age = ~ 4 hours
- hardware age = ~ half a year
- Asus P6t SE
- Core i7 920 (stock)
- ATI Radeon HD 5850 (stock)
- 22" Samsung screen (P2270)
- x" compaq second screen (don't know the size, 1280x1024 resolution)

and when i tried to run "perfmon /report" it gathered info for 60 seconds, and then crashed when generating a report saying there was a time-out.

i hope you guys can help me. could it be my videocard is broken, or my PSU is cooked? everything seems running fine atm

which drivers for what?
for my videocard i'm using Catalyst Control Center suite version 10.12.

but i don't know any other driver that you could be interested in. though probably i'm terribly mistaken

That's probably the problem. Firstly, uninstall 10.12 drivers and install 10.11 ones since the latest drivers are causing BSOD problems.

allright. done that. i'll report in a few mins if it BSOD's when the screen shuts down. btw, i have removed my second screen, i didn't like it (just added it after installing windows)...

well, set it to 1 min, then when it shut the screen down let it sit for 10 secs, and it just came back like normal

i do need to test this to see if it works when i leave it for 30 mins, but still, it's a promising sign

anyway, my "perfmon /report" just crashes when i let it run. does this mean my system is broken in any way? because the OS install can't get more fresh than this

It's good that you're getting that fixed. Well, about the perfmon crash I actually can't tell you since I don't know in which way it crashes or what it does. Does it simply freeze? Does it make your computer restart? What does it certainly do?

In addition, and in order to analyse your files I'm sure some great analyst is coming since I can't read those dumps etc. The catalyst 10.12 drivers are known as BSOD cause, in some cases, and that's why I've informed you.

umm, perfmon sometimes crashes and then you get a window saying "*don't-know -process-name.exe has stopped working"

and this time it just gives me a time-out error. i've added a screen for you

I am using the "version 10.12" drivers on my ATI 4850 and they work just great for some time now.

...I got the BSOD when I over-clocked my cpu too much.

...Having matched ram is quite important in my books.

Hello sam2fish. I'm not saying that having the catalyst 10.12 is a certain condition to get a BSOD. I'm saying that many people are complaiting about it and it is yet known as a possible cause of BSOD. It happened to me as well.

I would have to say that thundertjE's analysis is spot-on - the ATI driver running inside dwm.exe is causing the exception, and since it's a system service (transitioning from non-privileged code, aka user-mode, to privileged code, aka kernel-mode), it cannot cause an exception without causing the computer to bugcheck during this transition period:

nope. not yet, anyway. though my screen does shake violently when fading in/out of windows (like in startup and shutdown). could there be a particular reason for this? it did also happen when i had 10.12 installed btw

Hello Nighthawk4, what do you mean by shaking violently? Which tool did you use for remove your previous drivers?

i just went to control panel > remove program > ATI Catalyst Install Manager.

in the other thread someone said i needed to remove all traces with Disksweeper, but that made my pc unable to boot, so i don't think i should try that again

and what i mean by shaking violently; when windows fades from "welcome" to your desktop, the whole screen shakes 2cm to the left, then 2cm to the right every 0.2 seconds (or so), until the desktop has fully faded in.

In my opinion, it seems to be a driver related problem and probably, during uninstalling, some traces of 10.12 drivers files just remained. I would advice you to make all the BSOD proceedure again by creating the dumps folder and perfmon /report again. Then, post it here and an analyst will analyze it again, checking if it blames the same file.

Edit: By the way, did you use Driver Sweeper on some proper way?

How to use ?

There are two methods to use Driver Sweeper.
Both methods achieve the same results. This method is always able to clean all files.

This method will delete remaining files upon reboot (if deleting failed). You can clean your drivers this way:

Use the official uninstaller(s) of the driver(s) you want to uninstall.
Reboot your PC in Safe Mode.
Run Driver Sweeper and select what to clean.
Analyse lists all the entries possible to remove, cleaning removes the entries selected.
More drivers can be selected for the same cleaning process.

hmm no, i uninstalled my driver, then ran driversweeper which deleted the files on the next reboot. then my pc wouldn't start up anymore. i'll try this though.

It seems that your graphics card is synchronizing the image with your display. But it shouldn't happen, to be honest, and as I understand, you never had it right? I still suspect it has to be with the drivers removal, but I actually can't be sure.
