I know there are many other people having this same problem...

I just recently upgraded Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Home premium. When I "upgraded" though I chose to completly reinstall my OS.

Anyways I used to have transparency, but when I try to get that same effect it says

"The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver."

and then when I try to troubleshoot it says "Video card driver doesn't support Aero effects" . I've tried the "Fix it" options, but that doesnt work.

I just don't see how transperancy would work on vista but not with windows 7... do I seriously have to purchase a new video card?

Your video card manufacturer's support page should have the latest drivers that you can download and install.

Don't forget, because you carried out a clean install you will need to re-install your hardware drivers. Windows 7 does have a huge driver data base, but as Device Manager only lists a standard vga adapter, installing the manufacturer's drivers should solve your problem.

No, you shouldn't buy a new one, yours supports Aero but you have to install the driver

Motherboard drivers? I haven't a clue what that is.

I'm currently on campus and I don't have any of my setup CDs with me, but hopefully it's safe to assume that I can reinstall my drives from those CDs that came with the computer (?)

I've googled my computer's specs and it said the graphics hardware is NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT . Is that a video card; would it be safe to install from the win7 site or should I just wait till I get home to install all the drivers from the disks?

Download your video drivers here: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Generally speaking it's best to use the manufacturer's drivers, but in the absence of those it won't hurt to try the ones supplied by Windows.
