How do I figure out what's causing my computer to freeze and restart?

This issue came up a few days ago, I was just surfing the web and talking to friends on teamspeak when suddenly my computer froze, then it seemed to turn off. However, several seconds later it booted back up. This started happening more and more frequently and now it happens a few minutes after I turn on the computer.

I don't know what's causing this to happen and I would greatly appreciate any help in diagnosing the problem, as well as trying to fix it.

I'm not very knowledgable about computers and so if you guys can explain the lingo to me as well that would be helpful.

EDIT: I'm posting this on my laptop but most of my work is on the computer and I need to fix it asap.

When it crashes, my monitor turns off and then it just restarts normally except it said that the computer wasn't turned off properly, so I have to select the "run computer normally" option.

When it turns off, the lights on my keyboard go off, but the light on the power button remains.

I do not get BSOD at all.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Try selecting safe mode with networking to see if it crashes again.

If it doesn't use clean boot,
Could be a virus or driver issue....
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,
Cheers.

I have turned on the computer using safe boot + networking and I haven't had a crash so far. My computer seems to be running quite slow though, I don't know if that's because it's in safe mode

This is all the programs that are checked for start-ups, everything else is unticked.
The item "starter module" is a screenshot program called lightshot which I've had ever since I had this pc.

What free anti-virus software would you recommend apart from Avast?

Hi and thanks again
You have quite a boat load of goodies there
Fill in your system spec's with cpu-z or the link above my signature so we can have more info on the machine

Red flag for me is always Utorrent
Where is your favorite download place for all these third party urilities...... ?

Personally I would use Panda but I have Malwarebytes premium so I can use MSE
Which is my next suggestion go into safe mode with networking and download mbam free and scan the entire system,

Then restart using clean boot and uncheck everything on startup except for Avast
Then rescan using again the Custom scan and all connected drives.
Uncheck use the free trail in install options,
https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

Review Jacee’s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/316404-instant-savings-app.html
On the BleepingComputer site use the button that looks like this,
adwcleaner-button.JPG

Post the scan results.

I don't understand your question here "Where is your favorite download place for all these third party utilities"

I'll edit this post once I've finished with the scan

I was told to just post on this thread and update it by a user.

I booted up the computer in safe mode with networking and tried to scan the system with malwarebytes but during the scan my computer turned off by itself, this was the night before I had to leave town for a while.

When I came back, the computer didnt turn off by itself but now I'm getting BSOD sometimes and I don't know what is causing it to happen.

Everything loads super slowly, it takes minutes to load up chrome or anything in fact and even typing on this thread is laggy.

What can I do to fix the super slowness of my computer? And what can I do about the BSOD?

try removing that Uxstyle core Beta program, when you use Beta's beware.

That's weird, I waited until it finished. Anyway, I've ran it again and the zip file should have everything in it this time.

Unfortunately there are no dump files in your upload so we cant actually interrogate the root cause of the BSOD (check you are set to configure mini dumps correctly) but I have had a look at your files and a few things come to mind

Have you determined yet if you have any temperature/over heating issues as I suggested in first post ?
If not then get some software to monitor temperatures and record them at cold boot/idle then load machine to see what happens, you can use programs like Prime95 & Furmark to stress test the CPU & GFX but do not leave the machine while these are running and terminate the tests if the temperatures go to high or rise too fast.

If this doesn't help or temps are not the problem then try out the suggestions below and see if it helps, any of these things can reversed/re-installed if system stability is regained

You are running pirated software - this is never good and running cracks/activation exploits can have undesired consequences
There are errors with your avast software I would recommend removing this using this method and running an alternative - MSE is my preferred AV
Remove the free registry cleaner you have installed these programs cause more problems than they fix and lets hope damage has not already been done
Remove all ASRock software utilities these can often be problematic
Remove daemon tools and run the SPTD tool to make sure this driver is removed

It might actually be a temperature problem, I checked the computer's temperature in BIOS menu and it rose to 80 degrees Celsius whilst it was idle. Is this bad and what can i do about it?

About stress testing my cpu, I've downloaded prime95 but will I need to download a program that monitors my computers temperatures?

I have removed all the ASRock software as well as Avast and registry cleaner. I uninstalled daemon tools and installed the SPTD thing but it installed something and then told me to reboot to which I did and I don't know what to do afterwards.

DONT run Prime95, 80 degrees at idle is very bad
Your temps are almost certainly the problem, the fix is pretty easy if you are happy to open the case.

Initially you need clean all the dust off of your CPU heatsink and check that the fan is working (TBH your whole case will prob need a clean out) do this and check temps again, personally I like idle temps to be no higher than 40-45 degrees
After checking fans and cleaning dust if temps are still high then you may need to redo the thermal paste on the CPU and/or think about investing in an after market cooler for your rig

Are you OCing your machine at all ?

ps Speccy or HWinfo is good software for checking temps and seeing what you have in your machine with lots of info about voltages etc etc

Apologies for not explaining the SPTD tool, when you load it you want to hit the uninistall button to remove the SPTD.sys driver from your system, if the uninstall button is greyed out and not clickable then the driver is already not present
