Connect to my vpn from internet

I am a new member to this forum. I have setup an incoming vpn on my windows 7 computer that is on my home network. I would like to use my laptop at a wireless hot spot to connect to my vpn on my home network. I have the IP address of my ISP modem but I don't have a clue of how get to my vpn through the internet.

I would appriciate any help I can get.

Honestly, I'd retrace all of that, and just use LogMeIn.

Assign your home machine a static IP, then configure your router to forward the port being used for vpn to your home machine's IP. Then, just vpn to your public IP (you can find out what it is by going to What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address from your home machine) from anywhere on the internet.

An alternative and free for private use is Teamviewer - it also supports VPN if privacy is a concern

Can also be accessed via their web interface from any internet connected PC

Personally, it defeats the overwhelming reason of using a VPN if you're going to put a 3rd party in between the points that the traffic flows through. So I tend to stay away from things that use a centralized VPN login solution.

I have a static IP address for my ISP modem. My setup is ISP modem, Netgear router with a pptp port 1723 active, 3 desktop computers on the network. One of the computers has the vpn connection active. I am able to access the computer with vpn active from within my network by entering \\name of the vpn computer.

I need detail instructions on how to access my network through the internet on a computer not connected to my network. I can usually follow most instructions but my over all knowledge is limited. Thanks for any help you can provide.

My instructions were telling you how to do that. In order to, you'll need your public IP to connect to from the internet and you'll need to forward port 1723 to machine on your network providing the VPN service. Then, just set up a VPN connection on your computer wherever you are to connect to your public IP, which will then forward you to the internal machine hosting the vpn server and connect you.

I don"t know how to get past the router setup screen to use the computer with vpn the connection. I am lost. I have read some threads of people wanting to connect to their home network from work connecting to their vpn, but I could not find any solutions or instructions to make a connection to a home network. Any instructions would be appreciated.

The more you mention what you are trying to do, the more I think LogMeIn would work.

You have to set up a new VPN connection to your public IP, you can't just go there in your address bar.

Thanks for the detail vpn info on incoming and vpn out going connections. This is probably a stupid question but here goes. Is the incoming vpn setup on the home computer within my network and the outgoing vpn setup on a computer outside my home network using the internet to access the vpn of my computer ay home? I have a successful vpn incoming and outgoing connection on my home computer.

What I would like to do sounds simple. I would like to use my laptop with windows 7 out of town to get access to files on my home desktop computer running Windows 7 through the internet.

Yes that is correct.


The incoming set up would need to be done on the home machine "the one you are trying to connect to".
