AVG Install Error

Uninstall ZoneAlarm, and use Windows Firewall.... type [/B]services.msc[/B] in the start search box, click on the icon, then scroll down to Windows Firewall. Set it to start automatically. Set all ZA/checkpoint to disabled.

You can use this tooll to totally uninstall ZA, McAfee, AVG and any other application that didn't work. Uninstall & Remove McAfee Norton & More Antivirus Applications — OPSWAT AppRemover

Once you've removed all remnents, restart your computer and see if MSE will update now.

Thanks! Yes, I found that after reading a tutorial. It was a Chrome extension. It doesn't show on the app removal tool. I tried deleting it, but MSE still won't update. I do find that now I can update it manually, which is good! Thank you for that!!

Now I'm in a different kind of trouble. My sound doesn't work. When I went to Device Manager, the snap-in window is empty!

I just read this thread and have to say that I agree. Things have become way too messy to clean up by the looks.

You can definitely try a Repair install.
But I would back everything up first, as much as you can and prepare for full format and reload.
My advice is to cut your losses and save yourself the time and headache trying to fix issues from multiple A/V and Firewall installs that you will never be sure are completely fixed anyway.

Honestly, with all the things going on with that system, trying to repair it might work,
but you might also have other issues down the road.

Get rid of them all and start over, at least then you know that you are starting over
and any future issues should not be related to any previous issues.

Having numerous A/V's and Firewalls installed, and not being uninstalled properly, you will never be certain that any repairs attempted will have fixed any potential conflicts completely.
All future issues will be suspect of conflicts and possible OS corruption till you nuke and reload.

How many days have you been working on trying to repair this?
You could have fixed it by now by just backing up data and clean reinstalling the OS. Plus you would have a better peace of mind knowing that all existing issues would be gone, and any new ones are actual problems you can better deal with.

Also, AVG is complete total Garbage. Stick with MSE.
And Windows does not need a 3rd Party Firewall.

A great post but......Your personal opinion may just be slightly wrong re AVG.

I'm sorry JMH, that is based off of experience with fixing many many PC's with AVG installed.
Many of them have AVG installed with mass infections and AVG running a scan doesn't even detect them.
Then scan with an online scanner and AVG then pops up and says "You are infected". After the online scanner finds the infection first. I have seen this far too many times to not say AVG is garbage.

I fully and wholeheartedly stand by my statement, not only on Personal Opinion but based on facts that AVG fails in many ways.

Also,, this has nothing to do with fanboism. I would also recommend Avast over AVG.
But recommend MSE over Avast.

That is for freebees.
For payware, I would recommend NOD32, however, I have personal issues with them. The product is good.

It is not necessarily fanboism. We see plenty of BSOD's caused by AVG. I ran it on my system for seven months and never had the first problem with it. But I am one who consistently recommends MSE when a person is having computer problems. I know MSE runs smoothly with Windows 7. The idea is to eliminate a potential problem. I am running Avast currently with no problems with it.

Tepid, did most of those machines have the free version? The latest free version has all the technologies from the paid version and has, in my opinion, drastically improved its protection.

I came back to thank Jacee, and tell her and JMH that I did restore from my last back-up, which of course reinstalled the bug. I got rid of the other anti-virus junk as I had been shown, installed and updated MSE, killed the bug, changed my banking info, and I'm laughing.

I had come before, but when I saw one of your Seven Gurus actively promoting the anti-ethics of Alisa Rosenbaum, in a Help Forum, I was a bit horrified.
