Hello,

I've had a new problem on my 7077 installation.
Although my pc is running fine, when I try to click on my c drive, it says that it's not accessible.
There is therefore no information shown for it in terms of size, or or free space.
Even when logging in as an administrator, I cannot access it.

EDIT - I cannot even access my DVD drive, although I can access my D partition...

All was working fine until earlier this morning - and no, I haven't visited any 'dubious' sites recently ;)

Any advice would be greatfully received!

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Why arent you running RC?

It sounds like you used the upgrade install method from a previous build and I would therefore recommend a clean install to RC.

Hello,

I hadn't got as far as installing to RC due to workcommitments etc.
Unfortunately, I cannot install from a dvd as it cannot access the C drive!

The strange thing is, I'm typing this in Opera, which IS running from my C drive.
You're correct, each time, from 7000 upwards, I have upgraded Windows.
When I have previously opted to clean install, I always see folders from the previous installation, included in the C drive - I don't mean windowsold...

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

If you have a usb drive you might want to try followting this guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html?ltr=U

If you do a clean install then you shouldn't have been seeing windows.old. That only appears with an upgrade install.

Hello,

I should have made myself a little clearer, I meant to say that I see previous folders from installed programs, such as the ATI folder etc, and not windows.old.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

you could try running "scf /scannow" to see if that fixes any errors.

Thanks swarfega, how do I run that?
Bearing in mind that I don't seem to have ANY administrative rights (even though I also have enabled the Administrator account!)

in the search box in start menu type "cmd", once that is open then type in that command. You should right click on the cmd that comes up listed in start menu and select run as administrator.

Hello,

I've tried, but Windows cannot run cmd from the start menu as it says that
cannot access it, and that there might be a problem with the network.
Bearing in mind that the C drive doesn't show any info at all, nor is accessible by clicking on it, I'm wondering if it's a firewall problem?

For info, I'm using Comodo Firewall.

I can access pictures on my desktop, but cannot drag them onto my D partition. I can open them in paint.net (for example) and save them to D...

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Hello,

Just a quick update, I cannot access the DVD drive, but I can access a USB flash stick...

Would installing from a dvd over an external usb dvd drive work?

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

How are you trying to do a clean install?? You are suppossed to insert Win7 DVD then boot from the CD/DVD drive... (not running it from 'My Computer' from within Windows).

Make sure that your PC knows to try and boot from CD/DVD first in the BIOS setup. If it is set to boot from CD first before the hard-drive, then your CD/DVD drive might be dead.

Hello Generator,

The DVD drive isn't dead, it's been made unaccessible by the same problem that has made my C drive unaccessible, and nearly everything in the control panel unusable, saying things like check the address, or that I don't permission to open / do so and so, and to ask the network administrator for permission.

Even booting in safe mode, and logging in to the Administrator account doesn't change things.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

I ment can you boot up to the CD/DVD drive though, as in NOT going to the DVD via windows itself but booting straight to the DVD in order to do a total fresh install of Windows.

I am having this same problem in RC 7100. From what I can find out is that it's a problem with "homegroup" sharring. I still have not found an answer and the "official answer" I got from MS was "It is an RC therefore we do not offer support"
