Snipping Tool crashing & cannot perform repair install

Hi there,

I've encountered this problem when trying to save. The app freezes and error report shows up (that the program has stopped working). --see screen ("Výstřižky" is Snipping Tool in Czech)

Details of error --see attachments

It's caused by COMCTL32.dll stored in C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.7600.16661_none_fa62ad231704eab7

System restore didn't help. Tried sfc /scannow - reported errors that cannot be fixed. --see attachments (CBS.log - errors in the end of the file)

So I wanted to perform a repair install, but the installation compatibility control failed - couldn't upgrade x64 to x86, but I definitely chose x64 (now running x64) ... weird

Any ideas how to fix it? Snipping Tool or sfc.

You may want to retry a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html following the guide to the letter.

Another option is to repeatedly press F8 while booting to access the boot menu, then select Repair Computer from the list and see if any errors appear and get fixed.

I don't think there is a need to fix the System File Checker. There are errors it just cannot fix. That happens on any system.
As to the snipping tool, maybe you can "borrow" the snippingtool.exe (which is in the system32 folder) from another system and replace yours. Else I can really recommend those two alternatives:

1 thing you could try is to open explorer and navigate to c:\windows\system32 and right-click the snippingtool.exe and select 'Properties'. Under the Previous Versions tab does it list anything?

It could be that the file has been modified somehow and that there is still a shadow copy remaining for it.

I've followed this guide exactly, but no luck. After step 9 (choosing upgrade) there is a compatibility control that fails. It can be caused by the dvd, because it's multi ver (both x86 and x64 of HP, Pro, Ult). I have my OS preinstalled, so I had to download iso of this dvd. It might help dvd of Pro x64 only.

There's no previous version, unfortunately. But it's not altered anyhow, it has the original date.

The problem is most probably caused by COMCTL32.dll --see the very first error report (path without backslashes).

I tried to use Problem Steps Recorder, but when done (finish rec.) it crashes because of the same file - COMCTL32.dll

The repair install would help (I suppose), but I don't know why it's still failing...

Because my frustration is rather that I don't know why it's failing. The system is somehow damaged so I just want to solve it. Of course, there are many other suitable tools, but that's not the matter, actually.

I should have rather named it "Cannot perform a repair install" or something like that.

I totally understand where you are coming from as I am just as stubborn on getting things to work that I paid for. Will see what I can find for you and will post later.

Finally managed

I couldn't perform the repair install because of the dvd that was both x86 and x64. While using x64 only it was ok.

Snipping Tool is now fully working and SFC does not report any errors.
