Workgroup with static ip, Win7, and legacy Windows system

Hi,

I have ATT DSL, 2-Wire (2701HG-B) router, 2 desktop systems, hard-wired ethernet.
I am the only user.

When configured for non-static ip, problems with netbios "browsing" occurred. The router stays powered 24/7, but the pc's don't. I'd get the net working and MS Win would break it in a day or 2.

So I've set it up for static ip. I've been told that this will facilitate such a functional workgroup.

Ipconfig info on the 2 pc's follows my sig.

On the Win7 system and using Explorers Network icon, I get something like:

Enter Network Password
(for) System/User
x Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password
OK Cancel

The "Failure" msg appears before -and- after I enter the Admin password. All the sharing options (i.e. file sharing) are turned on except password protection, which is "off". It is very similar using the W2k machine.

When I enter //192.168.1.2 from the Explorer-Address line
it brings up IE and sez "page cannot be displayed".

Such a simple, simple thing to ask of MS software facilities. I've tested it in more ways than I can shake a stick at. To date, nothing works for long.

Any ideas on how this can be done? I would cheerfully, cheerfully settle for a single shared folder.

Thanks,
P

With Home premium you won't have those options. You can still get this working but you need to get into the registry to make some changes.

The following post covers the required registry adjustments and a few other details about how to set this up.

http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/95149-need-change-local-security-policy-win7-starter.html

This link is from windows support and describes the process to enable Win2K to share with Windows 7, in other words rather than allowing you to bypass NTLM authentication you can update your Win2K to work with NTLM.

Evidently the OP added the following *after* you marked the thread "solved":

Something's still not right even though adding the new key definitely helped some.

I'd chase it if I had evidence it would fix the problem, but ...

This link is from windows support and describes the process to enable Win2K to share with Windows 7, in other words rather than allowing you to bypass NTLM authentication you can update your Win2K to work with NTLM.
How to enable NTLM 2 authentication

Correct me if I'm wrong: this article is about making Win98 play NTLMv2. An excerpt:

NTLM 2 has been available for Windows NT 4.0 since Service Pack 4 (SP4) was released, and it is supported natively in Windows 2000. You can add NTLM 2 support to Windows 98 by installing the Active Directory Client Extensions.

So my W2k has NTLM 2. There is something in the art. about parameters in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibility but I'm not certain it is relevant. It keeps talking about "domain controllers". I am working with Point-to-Point Workgroup.

Are you sure you have time to sort out the details in such a nasty little mess as this? :-)

Thanks,
P

It does eliminate physical issues and IP stack is fine!

Try a simple Homegroup??? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/43961-homegroup-create.html
