For the little price difference, I would also vote for the Asus. Hard to go wrong with them. And in any case, Newegg is very good in helping you out if things do not work out.

Im looking really hard at the ASUS what about the x16/x4 Is it better than x8/x8? Just wondering because in the future I might switch to ATI

Also whats the difference in 870 and 880g? Just the onboard graphics?

880G is the Northbridge chip. Newer than the 870.

This is the on board graphics for the ASUS- ATI Radeon HD 4250.

I too say go for ther ASUS.

x16/x4 means that with one Video Card, that card will get its maiximum bandwidth allowed, which is x16.

If you add a second card, the first gets its full badwidth of x16 but the second card only gets x4.

Generally speaking, if you have intentions of Crossfiring or SLI multiple video cards, you really would be better off getting a board that offers x16/x16.
Although they are more expensive.

But for a single GPU, the ASUS will be a excellent board. It can do Crossfire or SLI, just not as well as aboard specifically designed to make the most of it.

As far as what brand you prefer, it will not matter if its ATI or Nvidia for a single card setup. Although staying w/ATI may offer the option of a Hybrid crossfire ..

So you can't use the white slot with Crossfire. SLI is not mentioned so may not be supported.
The PCIe x1 slot shares the bandwidth with the PCIe x16_2 slot. Due to the CrossFireX™ limitation, DO NOT use the PCIe x1 slot when you install two CrossFireX™ graphics cards on both the PCIe x16 slots to set up a CrossFireX™ configuration

But with a single card, it will not matter what brand you choose. Just go with whichever you personally prefer.

880G is the Northbridge chip. Newer than the 870.

No it isn't. In fact that Asus board isn't much more than the older 785G with USB3 support due to the SB710 South Bridge, and doesn't even support SATA6 (if that is important).

The Asrock on the other hand does have the newer 870 on it with the SB 850 and does support SATA6.

You can see what the differnt 7xx and 8xx chipsets are here,

That said if you're not going to use the onboard video and SATA6 is a consideration, then the Asrock is the one to get. That or something like this one for just a few $$ more,

The Asus looks really good but......... the Asrock has a higher clock speed of ddr3

I don't know how much this will influence you're decision if you don't plan to crossfire and you want to get the best out of the cpu yeah Asus would be golden also they have OC support

Asrock mobo is lacking a few things in that respect the 6gb sata is usefull

but like the previous post it is up to you and how you will use the unit that will decide to the board

This might sound odd but AsRock gets my vote.

AsRock is a subsidiary of ASUS usually using lower quality parts but because the motherboard shown there is an Extreme Edition this means it's technically an ASUS board with all quality parts intact.

EDit: The AsRock board has SB850 south-bridge which has onboard SATA-600 and USB 3.0, which would cost an extra $40 US for a PCI-e card and taking up one precious PCI-e slot which can be used a PCI-e soundcard instead.

The ASUS board on the other hand has a newer 880G north-bridge which has nothing new compared to the 870 found on the AsRock except for the onboard HD 4250 in which case the OP said he's getting a GTX 460 anyway (GTX 460 has HDMI).

Both boards have the same audio chipset ALC892 and good heatsinks for the north/south-bridge and mosfets.

As weird as it sounds, AsRock on this one. You can thank me when SATA-600 and USB 3.0 becomes standard for hard drives and peripherals in 2011 onwards.

This might sound odd but AsRock gets my vote.

@nemix Yup now between the asrock 870 and the gigabyte ga-870 the reason I kind of don't like asrock because I've read a lot of OC issues etc, I want to OC the phenom II x6 1055t to 3.5-4.0 after getting a corsair h50 or 70 and it is true that everything will turn SATA-600 and USB 3.0 which out of these two do you think is the better deal?
