It's simple....there are uncountable things that many people aren't happy with and there are often tweaks that will give them what they want. In previous versions i could have gone on for an hour describing the 100'sf things i SUCCESSFULLY changed to make myself happy with a computer i knew i'd be spending a good 4 years with. Had i heeded this advice i would have never been happy with it. Now you say this is the first windows version that works very well out of the box, and i agree. But there are customizations that are 100% subjective, and no one can say the OS if perfect out of the box because what you like about it i may not. As for the way it runs, fast, and the stability, you're quite right. It's a great OS. But it misses a lot of features the way i like it and i am working on changing that. So far i've changed a lot of things and it still works great. I understand what they've been saying and have accepted the idea that i shouldn't dig too deep, and i won't. But i will do what i feel i can do to make it work the way i want, and i assure you i will be far far happier that way. I already AM much happier than the way it was a few days ago when i installed it.

Tweak away, Dazco . I think the real point here is not that you shouldn't customize Win 7, but rather that changing permissions on some system files/folders reduces security and increases vulnerability should malware or virus strike. And, for those system folders for which permissions should remain default, there is generally a different location form which they can be accessed. I think most would agree that no one is 'warning you off' of tweaking.

Definitely not me.

The thing I hate most about a clean install is not getting Windows on the drive, not running Windows Update umpteen times until it's satisfied, not loading a bunch of drivers. Uh-uh, none of those things.

It's all the time it takes getting everything just so - that's the nuisance part.

As is always the case, you are making the mistake of confusing customizations with tweaks. No one is telling you not to customize the OS, but that doesn't include mucking around with permissions on system areas you shouldn't have a reason to be accessing, and should be left alone. Windows 7 is the most customizable OS we've had....yet it needs to least bit of tweaking. There's a BIG difference between the two.

iI finally got around to trying to reset permissions and i tried this command that i found in a link James posted in another thread... "icacls * /T /Q /C /RESET". w/o quotes of course. I ran CMD as admin as it said and i entered that and it seemed to be running thru a process and doing it's thing. But when done i could still access documents and settings. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what he meant, but i even had to jump thru hoops to get into documents and settings !...

All those folders that give "Access Denied" are junction points. They are set that way for a reason, You do not need to access them. EVER. Those junctions are there just for old broken applications. Use the real (see signature links) locations to access them data within them.

For example C:\Documents and Settings is really a junction that merely points to C:\Users
So trying to access it is completely and utterly pointless.
