Professional's "XP" mode vs Premium's "compatability"

Hmm...there was nothing like that in bios. I'm wondering if the "e" at the end of that pdf file is part of the model name and therefore a different model. I'll check bios again and see if theres a way to get to that if it's there and let you know. thanks.

You were right, it IS there. The downside is it's already enabled. So looks like no virtual XP. Nice.

I wouldn't say "no virtual XP". You likely just have a preventative issue that is as yet unrecognized. This additional info (bios) may lead someone to a helpful conclusion. Given my ignorance on VMs, I can offer no further help, but sygnus21 or someone else may be able to provide further info. If not, take it to other forums, google search, contact Gigabyte tech support. A solution will present itself (or at least an answer as to why you can't).

Ok, installed it along with virtual machine and it did it''s thing restarting and showing progress after boot and all that good stuff. Then when it's done and i'm back in window i look at the start menu and at some EXE and shortcut properties and i cannot find anything about XP mode. No checkable settings in executable or shortcut properties and no XP mode program on the start menu or anywhere. But it shows it's installed in add/remove progs. How the %$#@ do i use this thing? I have a game thats not working right....how to i get it to run in XP mode?

You won't want to run anything more than the most simple of games in XP Mode. It isn't made for gaming and has only basic graphics capabilities. If you had mentioned early on in the thread that this was about a game, we could have told you that.

I figured it out...at least why i can't find anything. VM didn't install. I tried it again and i noticed when the pc is booting up it's saying so many percent done but what i didn't notice was the word "failure". Tried it 3-4 more times but each time is says it failed and is reverting back. So XP mode installs fine but i can't get VM to install.

What are you referring to as VM? The two parts of XP Mode are 1) Microsoft Virtual PC and 2) XP Mode.

I meant Virtual PC. Just keep thinking "virtual machine" which was what it was called in the past. Anyways, i suppose it may be a waste of time, but as problematic as gears of war was on XP, the problems i've had making it work on 7 are worlds worse. And since VPC/XP mode is supposed to be the same as running a copy of XP from what i read, i thought it may allow me to run it. I have probably 25 games and none matter to me really except this one. So i'm a bit desperite to make it work.

Thanks, but in my efforts to get gears to work i believe i have screwed up this install beyond repair. I gave up on gears and tried to install another game and that one won't install because i don't apparently have access to the folder it is trying to install into. I think i'm just going to reinstall 7 one last time, and if this one doesn't work with the apps and games i have i'm just going to go back to XP. At least that always worked.

by the way, i have googled the he** out of this, so thats not going to get anywhere. i've tried a LOT of phrases during hours worth of searching and no answers that worked. I didn't just decided to ask here w/o trying the obvious first.

dazco, not so fast, please.

If you are going to do a re-install of Win 7 (it seems advisable at this point considering your last post) please follow this: How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7 .

Then read up a little more on compatibility mode. Win 7 is way better than XP. Really.

No offense intended, dazco. It's just that when you mentioned the game name, Mike recognized that we may have been 'chasing the wrong rabbit'. Maybe you've found and tried this, but:

Gears of War

Post #3 may be of particular interest.

I'm sorry, dazco, I didn't mean to imply you had not done so. The revelation regarding your real issue as related a specific game was a new one. Again, I meant no offense, dazco.

If your efforts to fix the initial issue caused further problems, a fresh install is probably warranted.

I would have to say that from what I've read after Googling, running GOW on Win 7 is going to be a futile effort, and it certainly will not be a good experience in a virtual machine.

Thanks, but i MUST reinstall now because i have screwed this install up trying to get this working. It worked at first, albeit with logon issues which cause me to not be able to save my keybind upon closing the game. Not a problem i could deal with, but the alternative turned out to be worse. Now i'm having problems installing anything. Tried to install MW2 and also windows live and they aren't allowed to install because of permissions. So i will look at mike's clean install link and do this again, and this time i will make an image on my storage drive after i've got it all configured with all the apps installed that i never had any issues with. Thanks.

+1 on the system drive imaging. I can't think of anything that is more 'bacon-saving' than having an image of a fresh, problem free install that can be quickly and easily restored. Once you have it, you can try to get 'Gears' working by the various methods found. What doesn't work can be written over with your image.

That said, I think the XP mode 'quest' can be shelved. Good luck. Let us know how it goes, or if you have further questions.

James
