Hey guys,

I installed the gtx 470 today and now my PC won't boot. If I turn my computer on, there is no picture on the screen, and my keyboard and mouse don't light up. The motherboard beeps once, which from what I have read, means it passed the POST. My psu is supposed to have 62A on the 12v rail, which should be enough to power the card.

When we take out the card, and use the on-board video, it boots fine.

Could this be a problem with the card? I have tried 3 different psu cables :P (From the wall to the psu) and we still have the problem. I would think the keyboard and mouse would still light up even if the card is defective, which is why I think there could not be enough power being sent to the computer

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My brother just got a new PSU today, I guess we could try that.
His PC is also having problems, so I think it will be a while before I can try it in my PC.

Do you know of anything else I could try in the mean time?

His is 54A, but I think his has 2 rails. Does the number of 12v rails affect anything?

EDIT: His has one 12v rail. His is also 750w.

Hmmm pretty weird indeed mate.

Few questions:

  • How old is that PSU? (that unit in particular is top notch)
  • Not to sound like a d*ck or anything but, did you plug both PCI-E 6 pin power connectors correctly?

EDIT: Btw, since your mobo has an integrated GPU, make sure the 'PCI-E' option is set to first on your primary video controller option in the BIOS.

I got the power supply last christmas, so it is around one year old. I also pressed the 6-pin cords in as far as I could.

Glad I picked a good power supply :D.

I can't even get into the BIOS with the card in, but when my dad unplugged the card, it seemed to go straight to using the onboard video. I guess I can try unplugging the gpu and going into the BIOS and checking.

His power supply should work....just testing anyway....could be just a bad 6 pin connector....

It's possible, but I was using the same 6 pin connectors in my gtx 275 and it was fine. These are 2 8 pin PCI-E connectors with two pins put to the side. (Does that make sense?) If that matters.

I'll try these things tomorrow, i'm too tired right now to try it XD.

I found something called Init display(there was more, I forgot) in advanced chipset in the BIOS. There were the choices: PCI-E,PCI, and Onboard. It was set to PCI so I set it to PCI-E.

After I reinstalled the card though, I had the same problem.
There was something called Internal graphics mode, and it was set to UMA, does this matter?

What's wrong? :(

The card should work...despite what the internal video is set on...if you disable it and the card doesn't work you've got nothing but black screens...hope you have a clear cmos jumper on the motherboard....

Your old card works....right?....the only difference is the new card uses more power....if a different power supply doesn't work...It's RMA time....

No...and don't disable the onboard either....its hard to work with the setting when you can't see anything...Do you have any different power supply around even if it is too weak to run the card and computer?

on the 20 pin motherboard connector there is a green wire(some are gray) that is the power good wire....ground that wire to a black wire....plug in the old power supply and turn it on....fan/any lights should come on...turn it off...use the molex to six pin adapters that usually comes with the card...with the system open and off, plug those into the card...turn the old PSU on ...try to boot....
for a better look: Info: Can I use two Power supplies with one computer?? - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net this will take most of the load off your system PSU but not overload the old one....Test First! Look at the illustration in the link!

I can understand that.

Without trying another PSU the only thing you can do is RMA the card....if the new one doesn't boot replace the power supply.
