A Rebuild Gone Bad

In my estimation your likely still fine with the Corsair 850 as it's a premium PSU with thoughtfully designed rail supplies. But more is always better.....but I would be totally surprised that this turned out to be the 850's issue.

The stand-offs were already in place. It's not just lying inside of it touching everything.

Lollies if the stand off's where already in place......where they in the correct place? One off in another place or an extra stand off added could be as bad as none in place.....it only takes one short to smoke something. I'm not saying this is the case here but maybe you could tell us how the standoffs came to be already screwed in? Who did it and did they get checked, did all the mobo screws go in and tighten properly. Of note though is if this was the case with your build it would have smoked up right away not a monitor change later !

They are molded into the case itself, the holes just line up with the motherboard. If that was the case everything would be out anyways.

I want to try an older card and see if that works because I have found a few posts about people with Asus boards who upgrade to the 580 and have the same problem. This is only after they upgrade from a different card. May or may not be the problem but I have no additional card and my friend is anal so I can't use his.

Are the latest bios installed on your asus board by chance? i may have asked already but as this thread is growing its hard remember what we have and havn't tried. But i would convince ur buddy into letting u use his vido card, wont hurt it.

I have not used it in a while so I doubt it, and I can't see anything so I'm not sure how I could go about updating it. I honestly dono what his problem is, I asked once so i don't wanna push it but he thinks that its going to reset his whole system or something so I dono.

I don't see anything in the manual about an LED for Post Codes or anything about post codes in general. There is one LED that does flash multiple times but I have to take another look to see which it is.

Some motherboards have a set of diagnostic LEDs either on the MB itself or on a bracket connected to the MB via a ribbon cable. I have an MSI board like the second example. If all four lights are green then the board is happy. If not, it gives you a combination of red & green LEDs to indicate what it doesn't like.

The fact that you didn't immediately say "oh, yeah - those" makes me think you don't have them. (But it wouldn't hurt to look.)

If your motherboard has PCI slots I would be going to Ebay or a computer fair/swapmeet and buying the cheapest Graphics card (should get one for $5) and trying that.

you re-enforce my logic, just like a stereo amplifier you are much more likely to fry your speakers with a low power amp over driven than with a high power one. Computers are no different and i think that the psu and a great case are the two best purchases you can make when starting in the home build game. Choose wisely and tons of issues are solved. Choose poorly and well you know.....heat, durability, expandability and power delivery all suffer

That is what I think I am going to do, just go get a cheap one somewhere because the more I research it, the more posts I find about people with the same issue and they ALL have Asus boards. Which leads me to believe it is a Bios update which is necessary or time till but they release a fix in a new bios version. But like everything else its a possibility.

Granite I could par with a new mobo but I think I'd rather wait a bit.

oh that's convenient!
I have a switch for my CMOS, and IO have a remote back panel switch extension for the CMOSCLR jumper so i don't have to dig under my video card, thopse things cancel each other out, i'm about to desolder that damn stich and add jumpers instead... warranty gone after? probably... but my case is pushing 140+Lbs and it's screwed into a Rack, i'm SOL if i have to clear my cmos or fumble with jumpers, there's also a massive GTX470 and a Cooling Duct in the way
