What Can I Do To Save Memory?

you'd love the machine I'm using right now
You made me curious. What machine is that. I use Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 to convert captured screen videos from .xesc format to .wmv format. And that takes quite some time (2 passes) even with my i7, 1GB GPU, 4GB RAM and the OCZ Vertex2 SSD.
I use FFmpeg in 64bit linux on a HP z800 with 2 6-core XEONs, 2 quadro FX 5800s (4GB ea), 96GB of DDR3 and 4 SAS HDDs in RAID 0. Write speed is probably comparable to a SSD, but there's no slowdown on large file transfers with a RAID array like you get with a SSD. When converting from DVD to .avi it actually takes longer to read the DVD than it does to make the conversion

This is a monster truck. I wish I could afford one of those. I guess I will have to continue to spend my retirement time waiting for th encodings to complete - LOL.

There's a seemingly infinite advantage in using an operating system that can be configured to use up to 80GB of RAM for video memory, or alternately, create a read/write cache for the HDD array of the same size. The system wasn't that expensive. I bought the baseline dual xeon model for about 8K and upgraded it myself for another 12 over the course of several months.

You are funny, I am shopping since a few months for a 15K car and still did not get it. All you are missing is an OCZ Revo drive.

Late I know but here is the ultimate means of saving memory!

1. Open the computer case.
2. Locate RAM.
3. Remove the sticks you want to save.
4. Store the saved RAM in a safe place. (Preferably in anti-static bags)

RAM is now saved. :D
