The final goal is to upgrade an older laptop to Windows 10 maintaining the apps on an existing HD with Windows 7 installed.
I've been updating and repairing some laptops that I purchased new (some time ago) and in that endeavor I have been moving hard drives between them.
The last one I am working on is an HP DV7 2185. It had been sitting underneath my workbench for several years waiting for me to get to it after it smoking due to bad power jack. Now that its been repaired it's missing the hard drive, that was used in a Toshiba Laptop.
The Vista OS on the HD was probably deleted and the Toshiba Windows 7 license was copied to it. Then the same HD was finally replaced in the Toshiba with a SSD (All the HD changes in the Toshiba were done with successful MS validation.)
Now I want to return the HD taken out of the Toshiba to the HP with the same Windows 7 system on it but validate it with the original Vista information on the Windows sticker that's on the HP laptop
Unfortunately I have not found the original CD that came with the HP laptop.
To summarize Is it possible to obtain a Windows 7 product ID with only the Vista sticker information available to me?
If I have to purchase a new windows 10 license / OS can I upgrade the existing Windows 7 system on that HD ?
