Solved Safely remove usb devices tray icon Poblem!

I had this exact problem.... After a clean install the icon would work fine. I like to take full ownership of my PC (C drive). Why? Because its my computer, not Microsoft's. They aren't about to tell me what I can or can not access on my PC.

Anyway, I noticed if I assigned full ownership to the username I had in place, the problem you are experiencing would start immediately afterwards. I searched for a resolution for weeks, but had no luck. This would only happen whenever I took full ownership of my PC.

Long story short, I decided one day to do a little tinkering. I did another clean install, and when I got to the point during the rebuild where I would normally take full ownership of C:, I decided to assign ownership to the administrators group, rather than to a specific user. And wouldn't you know, this resolved the problem and the remove hardware icon worked as it should from that point on. To verifiy that I had identified the problem, I did another clean install on a separate HDD, assigned full ownership of C: to the username, and the problem immediately returned.

I'm stumped as to why messing with rights and ownership would have anything to do with an icon for safely removing hardware, but it did. You may want to try this and see if works for you.

FYI: I am using the same version of windows as you (from MSDN) and I have the same portable HDD.

This is because Microsoft designed it this way. Why? Because thousands and thousands of users kept destroying their machines, corporate programmed malware and viruses (for finical gain), and 15 year old kids keep writing viruses. Microsoft got so tired of people destroying their machines and all the viruses they started locking the average user out of stuff they do not need access to, to protect the machine. One of the biggest complaints Microsoft received was “I want my machine to stop crashing”, “locking up”, and “give us more stability”. So they protected the areas that should only be access if you know exactly what you are doing as well as blocking malware and viruses. So taking ownership is exposing your machine to all of this.

You are only asking for trouble every time you take ownership. I keep reading over and over and over and over in this forum how people take ownership and then wonder why something does not work. The solution is: Clean Install. If you don’t mind malware, viruses or doing clean installs then I guess it is ok.

Just my 2 cents: I am not bashing or creating any flaming.

Hi everyone,

I have the same problem with Support4u. I don't think it is really related, but I also turn off Windows Firewall for a while to run TFTP. Before happen like this, all system icons disappeared when boot up after turn on Windows Firewall again. However it appears again after reboot, but USB tray icon no longer working. When I used "%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll", and click stop, the following message appears....

The 'ScanDisk Cruzer Blade USB Device' device is not removable and cannot be ejected or unplugged.

Have a nice day
Mayday.

Which settings did you make in Bios?
Sata as IDE => no "Safely.." icon, in some cases.

Try resetting your icon cache;

CCleaner will reset the icons;

This helps with quite a few tray icon problems.

However, if you have disabled or changed a lot of services and other stuff the problems are most likely due to that.

Careful, when I clicked on the picture, the Image Shack page came up - but also a virus. It could be coincidental, but it is better safe than sorry.

Try to start Task Manager and click safely remove tray icon, you should see DeviceDisplayObjectProvider.exe is launched after clicking on the tray icon and try to end that process, an empty device list will pop-up.

Solution:
Ensure Bluetooth Support Service is running (even you do not use Bluetooth!)

By default, the Bluetooth Support Service should be running. But I manually disabled it for optimization which caused the problems...

1. Start -> Run
2. Type in services.msc, and press ENTER
3. Scroll to Bluetooth Support Service, right-click -> Start
4. At this point, the safely remove hardware should be working again.
5. Restart your pc and Devices and Printers should load correctly as well.

I have that service set to "Manual".
I DON'T have support4u's problem.

I also set it to Manual.
I don't know what program that keeps it starting, but when i stop it and try to click on the safely remove tray icon no options/dialog box will pop-up.

I really don't know why it's necessary to start it or keeps it running.

I had a similar problem, but I don't recall how I fixed it. I know that I did a restore from disc - but I'm also sure you don't want to hear that.

Something came to mind - try device manager, uninstall the WD driver.. shut down, unplug the USB HD, restart without the external drive plugged in. When you plug the drive in the USB, it should load the drivers. Then try the safely remove icon....
edit: There is also the removal policy, either in properties or in Device Mgr for that device. Change it from what it is to the other (cache write-behind or not), restart and try the icon

As I said, I can't recall how I resolved it, but I think it was changing the removal policy
good luck

I'm not sure if this is how I solved my problem or if it will help you. Let me know if it does help.

Peace!
